Backup..

Tape drives suck, and HD's are only part of a backup system, optical media is good for backups. HD's can fail; but optical media just needs to be burnt and kept safe.

Of course, ideally you would have the backups on both HD's and optical, maybe even tape *shudder*.

I wouldn't bother with tape. I'm even planning ripping our aging DLT tape backups out of my data center this year and replacing with a disk-to-disk solution. Of course, I will want to virtualize it as a VTL (virtual tape library) so our existing backup software will continue to work and my staff needs less training, which is pretty cool.

I would be curious to know how many readers actually do use discs for their system backups...I don't even see how it could be done effectively with modern HD sizes.
I see optical discs as more of a permanent form of backup, as with external HDD's you tend to overwrite them often. I currently use an external HDD to store my backups, but I'd rather have additional disc backups as a final precaution, should some unforeseen disaster occur. Backing up the entire contents of my hard drive every month would allow me to access virtually any file I've ever had on my system should I find myself wanting.

If your a tard.. Yeah easier to break lol. Just be careful with them, and store them offsite, along with maybe even have a redundant set of discs.

You can never have too many backups.. lol

Now here's a rate of progress we could get used to. Nary a month after Pioneer trumpeted a 400GB Blu-ray Disc, out pops another press release from the firm boasting about a 500 gigger with a score of layers. Based on research at its Tokyo headquarters, specifications have been drafted for an incredibly capacious 500GB BD. Granted, this very company already had plans for a 500GB optical disc nearly four years ago, but there's no time like the present to make this stuff a reality, right?

I'm so glad I didn't fall for buying one of those cruddy 400GB discs when 500GB was right around the corner. See, it always pays to wait

By the time this hits the mass market bluray drives would most likely have 20x burn speed or more.
