Well like the article says, the faster card basically has to degrade down to the level of the slower card. So yea, it would not make any sense to do this IMHO, unless maybe you already owned a 4870 and you won a free 4850 somehow.

For Crossfire they just have to be in the same "family" so any 48xx can crossfire with any other 48xx be it 50,70, or X2. Brand has no factor either. This has always been the case at least since the 38xx series.

I don't get why they would compare dual graphic solutions against a single? Oh forget about it I figured it out...because the GTX 280 would kill them there benchmarks. It's still crazy to see how close the 280 alone is compared to the 4870 in crossfire.

Ok since you don't get it I'll tell you, everyone is going by price point, and since a single 280 card costs between $450-$550, and a single 4870 costs between $268-$300. The 4870 is only about 15% slower then the 280 but costs about 33% less. Crossfired 4870's cost about $550-$600, while sli 280's will cost you about $900-$1100. So from a price point 2 4870's almost cost the same as 1 280 and give you a almost a 40% boost in performance.
