My friend is a super Half-Life 2 addict, and if he leaves it on a table like a normal laptop, it will start throttling / crashing after 1-2 hours tops. He has to elevate the back and use a 90-150 CFM table fan to cool it, and even then it doesn't last as long as it should.

All that coupled with possibly a weak GPU design (like the recent issues Nvidia has been having) is a bad combination.

When ATI forgot about the mobile market every one moved to Nvidia; I doubt any one will be going back due to some reliability issues.
I'm not going to cheer for Apple here but given that Dell, HP and others have the same problems with their laptops and that those surfaced before these.. I'd be inclined to blame the chips in general instead.

Yeah.. Thats a huge batch of cores that were bad. Its a shame Nvidia doesnt want to exactly fix the problem themselves..

... really? do you want to be the guy that turns a thread about a huge issue into a flame war? Its not any OEM's problem, not the problem of any board problems. Its a shortcoming in NV engineering.

Now as for the topic, Apple stuffing the 8600's in the MBP and the 8800's in the iMacs were a huge win for Nvidia. Especially with the way Apple was marketing the 8 series integration, you've gotta wonder what this is going to do to that relationship.

I think the first reports of chip failure were saying that it took about a year of laptop use for the G86 and G86 parts to fail, longer for desktops because of poor cooling..

Of course, the OEM's will take the fall since they sold the computer, but I think this will start seeing some major publicity in the next few months when the 8400's that have become ever so popular start failing in droves.

This can't be good for end users, OEM's or NV..

Surprised it took so long for this to surface as this is a Nvidia issue.

Stupid Nvidia. Starting to really worry about them. Keep in business you idiots we need the competition.

imagine how much it would suck to be the engineer who finalized the design on this chip.
