nice looking, as always from ASUS...still somehow the position of NB seems strange, to close to horizontal nine of first slot...

Not really any where else to put it. Besides the first slot is PCI-E 4x, so it's unlikely to be used by a full length card, if it's even used at all.

asus seems to love their new 16 phase design. A sign of things to come?

Not quite. That means 4 slots all with 8x pci-e 2.0. Thats the same as 4 slots of 16x pci-e 1.1. Also means that when running just two slots they will run in "full" 16x pci-e 2.0. It's the same story on current x48 boards. No board has four lanes of 16x pci-e 2.0.
Its availible in 24 and 36 pci-e varients. Although x58 is truely different to previous chipsets. See here for the possibilities, Link Whats important is the the "D" varient which allows for two system buses. That means you could have two x58 chips on one board to give the "full" 4x 16x pci-e 2.0. Whats even better is that on duel chip boards you can have not only two cpu's but two northbridges as well. Combined with the ability of these processors to support two system buses quickpath they can have a direct link between cpu's making it much much faster.
