That's a good question, I thought it was a bit high as well. But then again, there was a 64% load when transferring a large file over the gigabit ethernet, so maybe the load in the DVD test is more from shuttling data to and from memory/IGP.

I wonder if it would be a scenario where some of these 780G/790GX boards with sideport memory would help any.

I never did understand - Why didn't intel just build off of its old Celeron 220 instead of rework the entire processor? Hell, if all they did was give it a die shrink to 45nm it would use just about as much power as this AMD chip as well as perform better.

Oh well, its Intel's screwup. Now both Via and AMD are trouncing the Atom!

For everyone else's reference: The Celeron 220 is as single-core on the Core 2 architecture. It has a 19W TDP at 1.2GHz. Amusingly, the Celeron 220 + SiS chipset consume only slightly more power than the Atom + 945. However, the Celeron 220 is faster.

A 65nm to 45nm die shrink would require a redesign of the chip. It wouldn't just be an image shrink.

Intel's biggest roadblock to making the Atom really successful is....... the Celeron. Intel is afraid of cutting into the sale of the Celeron. This is why they are only allowing PCI and purposely limiting features with the Atom. If Intel really wants to corner the market, they need to drop that horrible 945 chipset. When your NB/SB consume 6 times as much energy as your CPU, you have a problem.

I haven't really been impressed with the Atom. This is impressive with its performance and power consumption, but Intel can produce probably around 4 atoms for the price of a 2000+....

I think the Celeron would best the Atom given the right circumstances and good marketing.

The Celeron in Little Valley does beat the Atom. However, the Atom is all about yields and not efficiency. Intel can get 2500 Atoms off one platter while they can get only like 800-900 Celerons off the same disk.

Looks like the K8 arch will stay for awhile in the mobile market. Let's hope AMD will shrink this down to 45nm and make a dual core version while keeping the same TDP. That should be enough for most HTPC.

It's too weak for HD decoding still though
