Default [Toms] Intel's 'Larrabee' to Shakeup AMD, Nvidia

Quote:
Few advancements in computer technology interest enthusiasts as much as Intel’s future Larrabee architecture does. There is still so little known about final product details, yet the basic premise for the device has been pretty well established at this point. Naturally, where there is still mystery and interest, there will be curiosity and speculation, and Larrabee is no exception. Will it fail or will it not?

One key aspect of Larrabee’s success will stem from how well a gaming graphics solution it is. Despite not exactly being either a GPU http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_processing_unit or CPU, rather a hybrid solution of both, Intel is still clearly setting it’s sights on the gamer with Larrabee. One thing AMD has taught us about this is that to survive, you don’t need to have the fastest product, you just need something mainstream that’s priced right. If Intel fails here though, there would be little chance for Larrabee, especially since Intel’s graphics production history hasn’t been, well, pretty.

QFT.

Intel's graphics department sucks, so their new chip/platform better aim at the king of value award or else.....

I don't think this will be much of a shakeup for AMD. They have their own ray tracing project going with Cinema 2.0, and frankly it scores points for being able to use existing ATi and Nvidia graphics cards in parallel configurations.

This will still be monumental for Intel though, and I think that it's finally time the whole game industry move over to ray tracing. I hope Nvidia has a rabbit it can pull out of the hat because so far they haven't shown anything that lends itself well to this kind of industry shift.

AMD could make x86 GPU's. They must not be doing so for a reason.

RISC is just better???

It depends a lot on how it works in all honesty. Last I heard its not even the Intel graphics department that's making this. It's their CPU department I think, so this is really going to be something that will be unknown for awhile to come. Regardless though, if Intel really wants into the performance GPU market then they will get in there, its just a question of how much money they want to spend on it.
