Default [ExtremeTech] Memory and Performance: The Bottom Line

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2328804,00.asp

Quote:
We've come to ponder a number of issues dealing with memory:
  • Does increasing memory over a recommended amount change the experience for a given program?
  • Does choosing higher frequency memory make a huge difference over lower frequency memory?
  • What about increasing the capacity of lower frequency memory rather than upgrading to higher frequency memory?
  • What if you do both?
  • DDR3 seems primed to take over the industry. Is it time to embrace it over DDR2?

Nice article +rep on this one I actually thought that ddr3 would improve system speed a great deal but sad to say I am wrong. At least my 8gigs I got on this system seems to suit me just fine, maybe ill hold off on ddr3 on my next build.

Interesting read. Yeah, RAM doesn't matter.

Conclusion: Go back to SDRAM PC-133.

I think the FSB completely skews the results. If you're running 667Mhz ram already 1:1 with the processor, would you really see an increase with higher memory dividers? Don't think so. Memory by itself won't hardly make a difference if it's bound by FSB frequency. The ram and cpu have to work hand-in-hand for complete system throughput. You'll see the results of faster ram only if you have a cpu that can keep up and vice versa.

Exactly. Thats the only reason to really upgrade your RAM is if you are limiting your CPU's potential with crazy high FSB's. I dont understand the people with stock CPU's and running out to buy the fastest 1066 ram.

Glad I just upgraded to 4Gig of 1066 - It beat the DDR3 4 gig 1600 in one test

i think this would change when you overclock the FSB though. at that FSB the memory is bottlenecked by the FSB. you overclock the FSB and maybe it will allow for more memory bandwidth and better gains when tested. i know going from ddr2 800 to ddr2 1066 helped me alot, but i also went from 2GB to 4GB so it's hard to say.

I think it's a bit too early to call it based on that review. They took the faster end DDR2 and compared it to the slower end of DDR3. Of course there isn't going to be a huge difference in performance. I bet if they took DDR3-2500 and compared it to DDR2-1066, there would be a much bigger difference.
