Default [TcMag] 216 Cores-equipped GeForce GTX 260 makes its debut

Quote:
Nvidia has now (finally) given the thumbs up for the introduction of the improved GeForce GTX 260 which, compared to the older GTX 260, has not 192 but 216 Processing Cores. Powered by the 65nm G200-103-A2 chip, the 'new' graphics card looks just like a regular GTX 260 and has the same reference clocks as its predecessor - 576 MHz for the GPU, 1242 MHz for the shaders and 1998 MHz for the 896 MB of GDDR3 memory.

The upgraded GeForce GTX 260 still has a 448-bit memory interface, triple-SLI and DirectX 10(.0) support and requires extra power via two 6-pin PCIe connectors. Given the surplus of Processing Cores, the 1.1 version GeForce GTX 260 will come with a little price premium but hopefully that will go down as soon as the stocks of older GTX 260s are depleted.

To see how the latest G(T)200 baby performs check out the tests over

They did this with the 8800gts twice (once for the additional stream procesors, and once for the switch to g92), and it was confusing then and its confusing now. I don't know why they wouldn't give it some name to differentiate itself, lets say the GTX 265 or something. I thought Nvidia's new naming scheme was supposed to clear up confusion on the power of cards.

I'm betting closer that it will match the speed of the HD4870.

You got to love competition. Now the consumers are getting what they want, more powerful GPUs at a lower price! If ATI hadnt done such a good job, NVIDIA would have been more then happy to not have to revise their GPUs or lower prices. Now we need AMD CPUs to best Intel.

It is great for the market (and their revenue) to keep introducing minor upgrades to already good cards, but there are a lot of features that we're still waiting on besides just a few more fps. We want better SLI/X-fire compatibility and scaling, better optimization for quad core processors, and all the fixin's!

Besides, I will trade out my "old" 8800GTX once it stops appearing on comparison charts with the brand spankin' new GPUs. I don't think I've ever bought a video card that has had this kind of longevity. I'm waiting for the "new" 8800GTX/Ultra to be released...so far....nothing..

You still have the exact same card. If you go by what has happened in the past then you know not to buy a card on its release date.

Agreed. I think if they named it something like the GTX 270, they wouldn't piss off the people who bought the original GTX 260s. Plus, that way, they get another part as well. Perhaps yeilds are up, but still, now all of the GPUs that have 2 dysfunctional SP clusters are going to be tossed as opposed to having a part for the GTX 260 and a separate part for those dies that only have 1 SP cluster disabled for the GTX 270. They could probably get away with a slight price premium over the GTX 260 with this "GTX 270" since it performs better too.
