ATI is definately "winning this round" as much as it pains me to consider this some sort of game and race.

But my reason for posting was the fact that the article calls the X2 the fastest and the normal non-X2 the best performance when it's not. That is the 280GTX.

And as a note I'm no fanboy. The 280GTX can go to overpriced hell.
I thought you were saying the HD4870X2 isn't the best because it's two GPUs, sorry.

Maybe they meant the HD4870 was best performance/price?

Fun fact, the GTX260 is sold at a loss, and the GTX280 has about a $-10 to 20 margin on it.

At the retail level. I don't know about production or nvidia -> vendor costs.

I've been convinced ATI were selling at a loss too. But how on earth do they make the moeny back? With consoles it's licensing the games, but with hardware? Huh?

The HD4850's are just about at cost, similar to the GTX280.

The HD4870's are like $30 markup. The HD4870X2's are around $80 markup.

I've heard multiple RMA horror stories about all of those brands... particularly scathing reviews about diamond and sapphire. 4 week RMA to China? No thanks.

I've heard good accounts as well, but even the good accounts aren't as fast and trouble free as evga can offer me.

And I know HIS replaced a card I tool the original HS/F off of, and did a OC past factory and volt mod on. They only have a 3 year warrenty though.
I've heard to many accounts of RMA's being denied by ATI resellers to feel comfy about any of that.

I've owned both 4850's and 4870's for testing purposes, but I have settled with an evga GTX 260 as my permanent card for my current build. No ATI reseller can offer me cross-shipping, almost guaranteed RMA approval, step-ups, and fast turnaround every time. I've heard too many stories to feel comfortable with any of them. Not to mention which, I only live about two hours away from evga, so step-ups and rma's take one day to arrive with standard ground shipping.

I may have read one, two horror stories about evga, and they weren't even that bad. I've probably read hundreds over the years about ATI resellers.

I hate articles like this that assume there is only one reason people buy a video card. In addition to liking Nvidia resellers more, the GTX 260 has a noticeably quieter cooler, fan control that actually works, and looks/feels 10x higher quality than any of the two 4850's and three 4870's that I've had in my hands.

As long as Nvidia continues to offer these different advantages, they should still be in demand regardless of where they fall in the performance pile.

Then the 88xx series was released, everyone criticized ATI and liked to kick them while they were down. Now they have the perfomance crown and people are upset? Did they expect nvidia to sit on the throne forever, geeze, people should welcome this, this is great for consumers.

Nvidia and ATI will always and forever duke it out. Both have pros and cons and like Elxiliath said, the market will always be a tug of war roller coaster ride. Deal with it. Both are great company's.

This is one of the most illogical comments I have ever heard, and I hear frequently. The graphics card is, as far as you are concerned, a black box. How it achieves the performance that you get out of it is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that it has performance and that the price is competitive, which it is.

Yeah that argument is retarded.

It is housed as a single (albeit absolutely massive) card but functions as two cards. It is two cards. Hense "X2" in the title.

The X" IS the fastest card. However the 4870 is not the best performance card. The 280GTX is and up until recently the 4850 has been the third place card.

I mean, I'm not unhappy, or something sad like that, that ATI has some fast cards, but I hate Fudzilla and the bias they spew.
The 4870X2 does not require a CrossFire motherboard and it handled by the drivers as a single card (unlike Nvidia's dual GPU cards, which are handled as seperate cards in SLI by the drivers).

Cards that cost over $400 do not qualify in the "best bang for your buck" category.... And I bet to differ that the GTX280 offers better performance for the price than the GTX260 or the 4850.

I have to agree with you. Although I don't really regret my purchase of the 4870, it would have probably of been smarter to get the GTX260 because of the better service from the resellers.

I don't like EVGA however. I purchased a card on Ebay and when I registered the card I bought the advanced RMA thing for ~$8. Well later I found out that because I bought the card on Ebay that I am not elligable for warranty service (retarded) and upon reading EVGA's TOS I found that I could have my advanced RMA service cancled and the money transfered to "EVGA Bucks". Well after several emails and phone calls the EVGA reps were either quite rude to me or were just plain useless. Eventually they said they would have the money transfered to EVGA Bucks but after a year they still haven't done it.
