I'm actually considering a high end laptop as my new rig... I hate to give up a desktop, but I really want to be able to take it to my friends and game together.

off-topic: Would it be possible to upgrade a laptop's motherboard. Like from a company like falcon northwest (<yes I know, we hate those names around here ;D)

Other than the video cards I'm not sure why this is news. I have virtually the same computer as a Dell Inspiron, and it is almost 2 years old and it was $1800 when I got it.

Generally I've found that the Dell XPSs or high-end Inspirons are a better bang for your buck then the Alienware. But I guess people buying Alienware don't really care about bang for the buck.

Isn't Alienware like a part of Dell? What I don't understand is why Alienware charges $300 for the same Blu-ray drive that Dell sells for $150...

Isnt you laptop the same as mine? The M170? The M1710 is a later model with a C2D and 7900GTX

I think that goes for all boutique manufacturers on the market today. You have to keep in mind that laptops are the most profitable for any manufacturer because you can't build your own laptop compared to desktops. If you were to build the exact same laptop with Dell, HP, Sony or any other manufacturer, the price would be approximately the same. If you think Alienware is expensive, you should check out Voodoo.

You have a 2 year old Inspiron that has twin graphics cards comparable to CFX HD 3870s and a CPU that can rival a 2.26ghz Penryn? Must be one insane laptop mod, then.

IMO, the base price of the m17 is quite competitive - $1399 for a 2.26ghz P8400, single HD 3870, 2gb DDR3 1066, 160gb 7200rpm HDD, 1440x900 (a bit low but it goes well with the single graphics card).

A kid in the class I TA for has an alienware lappy.

It really looks neat. Its shiny and has a nice backlit keyboard. But it looks really difficult to lug around and always has to be plugged in.

If you are a gamer on the go, it almost makes sense, but if you are using it for anything practical, its just a liability and a pain.

I bought an alienware m9700 gaming laptop a few years ago and it was a pile of crap for the amount of money I paid. For $3000 dollars it was only slightly better than my pentium 4 nvidia 6800gt desktop. Sure it was nice to bring over to a friend's once in a while but that is really all it can be good for. It was too heavy/bulky to bring to class and the battery power only lasted an hour at most. If you want to game, get a desktop imo. You can always bring the desktop over to a friend's to play, it will just take some more effort. It was the mistake of buying this laptop that made me focus on building my own pc with great bang per buck pieces. That's my 2 cents.
