With that in mind, I think this will end up being just like the 4870 in the GPU world, which is a great thing for AMD. FYI last quarter (or the one before, I can't remember) AMD's market share actually rose. They aren't exactly raking in cash like intel, but I am fairly convinced that they are now at least somewhat firmly back on track.

I agree with you that we all would like to see AMD come out with something that really upsets the market, but that just isn't going to happen atm. What I can say though is that if this thing performs at least as good as promised, and is priced right, we are going to see a LOT of enthusiast systems with these chips installed.

E: Oh, and thank you for your business
Not a problem.

i think you are overlooking quite a lot here.

when was the last time you saw an AMD processor hit 6ghz? when was the last time you saw an Intel processor hit 6ghz???

the fact that this is being done with only dry ice and a normal, mainstream mobo means that for normal overclocking on the same mobo type or a better mobo ie Rampage Extreme for Intel but the AMD version / calibre means that the OCs will likely be pretty darn high - around the level we see for C2D / C2Q at the moment, or higher.. even for a suicide run that is extremely impressive.

add to that faster performance than Phenom 1 and probably C2D for a lower price than i7 means AMD could probably have pulled another 48xx out of their hats.

oh, and it's 6ghz on a QUAD CORE processor.

Naw, I just find that 26 pages of Nvidia flaming is perfectly acceptable(or Intel for that matter) but the second you tell an AMD follower not to 'count his eggs before they hatch' you are immediately ridiculed for being a fanboy and or stupid. Ironic eh?
I wasn't saying that it was 'bad', but rather reflected your mood.
I'm right there with you on not counting the chickens.....I've been around too long to see way too many pieces of hardware and games not live up to the hype.
Anyone remember BattleCruiser 3000 A. D. ? Epitome of epic fail.

Cannot agree with you more on that one

I guess out of all my rather long ramblings its all about not counting your eggs. It just seemed people are planning this party not knowing who the "guest of honor" even is. (if you see the correlation)
Especially with AMD, we need to reserve our commendation until a decent product comes out...not just one that hits a high Ghz. Lord knows, there have been MANY MANY MANY iterations of chips hit that high, especially when being super cooled.

People need to remember this is a chip running on an old motherboard with cheap DDR2 memory. This isn't an $1100 Intel chip on a $450 Intel motherboard with a $175 memory kit.

Yeah, Nehalem had the Memory Voltage and OC lock stuff happening which caused a lot of Intel hate.

Although it is making me skeptical, all this hype, I do think AMD will live up to the hype and release a good chip for those of us who can't afford a AU$500 Motherboard, AU$600 CPU and AU$300 worth of RAM for Nehalem. (Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5, Core i7 920 and some corsiar RAM)

Realistically it's much lower

Low-Mid 4ghz tops on air cooling, I'm thinking

Slightly more detailed/specific info regarding AMD's event ->

http://i4memory.com/f56/amd-austin-t...-inside-11713/

I quite literally just got back to the hotel from AMD's Austin campus after a day with some rather interesting information being disclosed and freely discussed.

Unfortunately, the level of free discussion outside of the room is heavily covered by NDA so I'm unable to announce specific details. But this is what I can say...

The new platform from AMD will be called 'Dragon' and will be focused around the new 'Phenom II' processors, 4800-series Radeon graphics cards and 7-series chipset based motherboards.

Here are some general performance observations that I can disclose:

Phenom II and the Dragon platform can overclock to 4GHz on air - we were demonstrated a system @ 3.9GHz using stock bus frequency and HT link frequency and a multiplier set at 19.5x. This was done with 1.55v BIOS set. This system was looping endlessly through a Crysis time demo without issue; by the end of the day it was past 100 loops.

The platform core specifications demonstrated were as follows:

Phenom II processor
GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-DS4H motherboard
Radeon HD4870X2 graphics
OCZ Reaper memory

While the unit demonstrated was @ 3.9GHz, we later had a hands on benching period with the new platform and I was able to quite easily reach this stated 4GHz frequency.

This same platform also exceeded 5GHz on liquid nitrogen cooling. But what was perhaps the coolest (no pun intended) specific of this demonstration was the processor operating and even cold booting at -196 degrees Celsius - that's right, AMD has no cold bugs of any kind, at all for Phenom II!

During this LN2 session the system was demonstrated operating in excess of 5GHz and running 1.95v BIOS set (1.936v CPU-Z read in Windows) and as stated, at the maximum lowest temps available with liquid nitrogen - time to find a liquid helium supplier peeps!

I'm gagged by the NDA on any further information and specifications such as model numbers, product features + specs, stock clock frequencies or even specific overclocked frequencies (i.e. LN2 max) as well as pricing, competitive performance or bench scores. So please, don't even bother asking me these questions as I cannot and will not answer these questions - at least until the NDA drops.

What I wanted to do with this post is at least let you all know that there is hope still for AMD and that while I've harped on about the LN2 experience, the overclocking ability is solid for LN2, phase, water and air cooling methods.

Cheers guys
