I have to disagree. Perhaps we just have a different opinion on what real-world is. To me, it means what I can overclock the chip to using conventional methods (no LN2 and dry ice is NOT conventional) of cooling and voltages that are safe in the long term.

Until I see someone with an LN2 rig, stratospheric voltages and all, playing a couple levels of Crysis while eating a bag of Doritos, I'm saying this is suicide run/benchmark rig/experimental only.

In the general sense I don't really care who has the superior product. I do care who has best combination of a good performing product (in my Cooler Master case and it's 120mm CPU cooler) and best value.

GOOD Finally some competition in the processor industry.

Maybe only then can I buy a piece of silicon for less than $50 shipped.

The slowest system—cooled with a heatsink and fan—managed to reach just under 4GHz with a 1.55V core voltage. With liquid cooling, AMD successfully pushed a 45nm Phenom II in another machine just over the 4GHz mark. That required kicking up the CPU voltage to 1.6V, however. For the other two systems, AMD took out the big guns. One was strapped to a phase-change cooler and reached the mid-4GHz range at 1.7V, while the fastest system managed to well over 5GHz using liquid nitrogen (which kept the core temperature down to a chilly -185°C).

$35 for a dual core at 2GHZ. AMD motherboards are also more for less cash. Excellent option for HTCP and general non-gaming purposes. Hell, that CPU is even good for gaming. Catch is you will need a heat sink. If you have a spare around there amazing deal.

Are you guys even READING the actual post????

While the 3.0 GHz Phenom II will likely not perform anywhere near that of the new 3.2 GHz Intel i7, it will show very well against the older Intel Core 2 quads. Not only that, but we will see how AMD scales clockspeed in the future, as well as how they handle DDR-3 support early next year. With AMD's constant process improvement program, and tweaks to the Phenom II design that we typically see in the manufacturing stage, AMD could theoretically have a 3.4 to 3.6 GHz processor at moderate TDP levels (think 125 watts) that would more adequately perform against the mighty i7 within the next 8 months.
I get called a fanboy because I tell the truth..on OCN...go figure.

People are praising them for hitting high GHz under DRY ICE. Thats like saying my car wouldn't be faster using jet fuel. You bet your ass it would be...but I don't think my engine would live past a couple miles.

I see all sorts of "Way to go AMD..." or "Yeah AMD back in the game..." There wasn't and hasn't been a SINGLE benchmark on their quad. How the hell do you know it is this "I7 killer.." when they themselves say its meant to go up against aging quads. Some of you are either ignorant to facts or blind. Go ahead, call me a fanboy because I call it like it is AND provide facts. It only shows how ignorant you are.

I WOULD LOOOOOOOVE FOR AMD TO HAVE A HELL OF A QUAD, if anything it would force Intel to lower their prices a little, but given their track record the last couple years I am not betting on it.

Remember, before you call me a fanboy for pointing out hard facts, come back with something that even makes sense. Not, "You are the biggest fanboy ever...". That only solidifies my statements.

They do make for a VERY good HTPC. Especially with the new Nvidia 9xxx series motherboards.

You can even get a little gaming done!

A Zalman 8700 is an excellent addition to that HTPC setup

I'm not sure how long you've been OC'ing for, but a chip's extreme overclocking capabilities can be a tell-tale sign of its potential performance under less strenuous overclocking conditions.

What are you talking about? Legit Shanghai benchmarks showing 20% improvement over Barcelona have been out for weeks, which put it slightly ahead of Core 2 and behind I7.

So if AMD releases a quad 10-15% slower than than intel's top end quads, for 30-40% lower price, that wouldn't cause Intel to drop prices? Need I say 4870 and 280GTX?
