There is a load of digital music players on the market (see my Holiday Guide) that offer consumers quite a bit of choice. However, there is not much competition in the way of touch screen players like the iPod touch. Rumors are flying this weekend that Sony will announce a new Walkman-branded portable media player. With the wild speculation that Palm will actually announce something more than another color Centro and this Sony news CES may actually have some good value for those in the mobile space this year.

The rumored new Sony media player specifications include the following:
  • 32GB and 16GB models
  • 3 inch OLED touchscreen display
  • WiFi
  • FM radio
  • Amazon MP3 store support
  • YouTube player
  • Web browser
If the device has a Bluetooth radio with A2DP support that would be another feature that sets it apart from the iPod touch. The iPod touch is being heavily marketed as a gaming machine lately and I am sure the Sony device would never go into this area since they have the PSP. It does look like a very good device though and we’ll be keeping our eye on the news at CES.

Thanks to the Boy Genius Report for the news.

I would love to buy the archos 5 but I don't want to buy anything far above 200 bucks and Im no fan of apple for 220/230 itouch is no go even tho I think it's a great device (Ive use my friends everyday playing games) . And also, the archos is a little too underpowered for the resolution to play games and the itouch has no fm radio.

That's a load of crap. It's horrible to play games on (except for iPint).

Its probably the best mp3 gaming device on the market not counting the psp because it cans acually play games at 30 fps while others (like the archos 5) run the same games at 10 fps.

If the OLED rumor is true, there's not a chance it'll be under $400. They charge an arm and a leg for those things right now.

I'd worry about purchasing a Sony media player simply because they have a history of being gigantic [expletive]s when it comes to DRM and other 'security features' of that nature.

Sony’s latest addition to the Walkman line is slated for a 2009 debut at CES. The supposed touchscreen Walkman will come in 16GB and 32GB flavors, sport an OLED screen, and even feature some Wi-Fi capabilities! You know, so you can watch YouTube and other completely original tasks for a internet-capable touchscreen MP3 player.

It’s suggested that the software of the Walkman will remain essentially the same, and there won’t be much difference between the menu structure of current Walkman players and the expected arrival. It’ll support MP3, WMA, AAC and PCM audio codecs along with AVC, MPEG-4 and WMV video.

Heck, the player is so advanced that it even features a fully featured music store, a web browser, and to help set it apart from anything else on the market that might bear any resemblance, an FM tuner! Booyah!

It’s rare that in today’s market you’ll see fresh and original pieces of technology like this. It’s always great when a big company like Sony takes it upon themselves to really break the mold. I wonder what Appl--- err, Sony will come up with next?

I guess the OLED prices are dropping coz i noticed a Nokia phone with a OLED screen ment for gaming(I dont remember the exact model, something in he N series for sure.) that costs less than 300$.

About the DRM, i would worry too

There was a 14" monitor I saw for ~$900 that was all OLED.
I don't think 3" will cost a sky high price as it once did.

like I said - it wont cost anywhere near that considering you can get a 14" OLED monitor for $900
