Default [CustomPC]Toshiba announces first 512GB solid state disk

Quote:
Intel might have its eyes on the growing solid state disk business, but its drives currently only offer limited capacities of up to 160GB. However, SSDs will soon be rivalling hard drives in terms of storage space, as Toshiba says that it’s going to launch a 512GB SSD next year.

Based on 43nm multi-level NAND cells, Toshiba says that the new drive has a maximum sequential write speed of 200MB/sec, and a maximum sequential read speed of 240MB/sec. The S-ATA 2 drive will be available in standard 2.5in packaging, although Toshiba is also launching other capacities of SSD using the 43nm cells. These include 64GB, 128GB and 256GB SSDs, which will be available in 1.8in drive cases and 1.8in flash modules, as well as the standard 2.5in cases.

Toshiba plans to showcase the new drives at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2009, and says that it expects the drives to go into mass production between April and June in the same year. The company says that it’s aiming the drives at customers who want ‘a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems.’

Although Toshiba has never really cared for the desktop hard drive business, its laptop hard drives have been a major staple of laptop storage for a number of years. The company says that it expects the SSD market to occupy approximately 10 per cent of the laptop storage market in 2010, and that this will increase to 25 per cent in 2012.

Kiyoshi Kobayashi, vice president of Toshiba's Semiconductor Company, claimed that ‘the solid state drive market is evolving rapidly, with higher performance drives to meet market requirements.’ He also added that Toshiba’s new ‘43nm SSD family balances value/performance characteristics for its targeted consumer applications, through use of MLC NAND and an advanced controller architecture.’

No pricing for the 43nm drives has been announced yet, although we suspect that a half-terabyte SSD is going to cost a sack of cash at the moment. Even so, it’s good to see that Toshiba has the ability to pack 512GB of solid state storage into a 2.5in enclosure. With speed and capacity sorted out, it’s only the price of SSDs that needs to come down before they become mainstream.

If prices come down significantly, I'm in for a couple of SSD's Q409 (certainly not 500GB models) - along with Wetemere and some fast DDR3 (that should be down in price too)

these Toshiba's are 240MB/s Read & 200MB/s Write Versus Intel's X25 Extreme 250MB/s Read & 170MB/s Write.

looks as if SSD's are getting a lot faster ...

Another bonus of solid state is that their is no moving parts, perfect for video cameras that get knocked about.

Dun care about maximum! Give me average...I'd say 150mb/s avg write, which is higher than the VelociRaptor drives.
