Default [ExtremeTech] X58 Motherboard Roundup

Another X58 motheboard roundup, so use it along with the VR-Zone and Anandtech reviews posted previously on this site.

If a chipset like Intel's X58 motherboard with its south bridge of choice, the ICH10R, is shipped with tight design guidelines, what can a board manufacturer do besides adding stuff like audio and extra SATA ports?

Today we present to you four X58 motherboard reviews. Some of their specs are nearly identical, but their add-ons and omissions are often what tell them apart. Not this time.

One of the X58 motherboards in this roundup review blew the socks off our benchmarks. Its victory was so decisive that we rechecked the entire BIOS setup utility, reinstalled the OS and everything that goes with it, reinstalled the benchmarks, and re-ran them—and found the same results. We drank a lot of black coffee along the way (sorry, we fogies are too old for Red Bull).

While feature sets are always interesting, the benchmarks themselves, especially the board in question, are the key to this roundup.

Two "Extreme" motherboards were also tested by ExtremeTech in a previous article, which can be found here:

Edit: Go ASUS P6T! And this was the base version... I'd like to see the chipset temperatures though considering the chipset cooling was seemingly meager.

Unfair comparison much? I find it hard to believe neither the UD4P nor EVGA managed to OC the CPU to 3.8GHz. Sounds like incompetent reviewers.

Yeah seriously! One would think that they could compare at the same clock speeds instead of random clocks for each board.

Are we sure it's the base version? It lists dual gigabit ethernet as a feature, which mine certainly doesn't have.

I'm inclined to give these guys (and Anandtech) the benefit of the doubt...as someone who was planning on building an EVGA mobo/i7 system, I'm definitely now rethinking things.

There are at least 3 versions, and as far as I know only the non-base ones have much bigger chipset cooling, so I imagine it is. I think they made a mistake in that summary table as there is no second ethernet port on the back in their review pictures - just the one.

Um, what? That's a horrible argument. They didn't pick random clock speeds, they overclocked as far as they could on each. You buy those motherboards because you want to overclock.

Perhaps. But until you prove them wrong by purchasing one of those boards and beating their mark then its just speculation on your part. Besides, if they are incompetent then that says even more about the ASUS P6T's overclocking features as it clearly is easy to operate.

I have had, a rampage II extreme, Asus P6t, Gigabyte UD5, Gigabyte DS4, and EVGA X58. Running them with the same chip I found that the UD5 seems to do the best followed by the P6t then the Rampage II, DS4 and in last was the EVGA board.

That being said at equal clocks the P6T seems to do a bit better, its small but seems to work out that way one the benchmarks.

Unless he took screenshots of each how do you expect him to prove it?
