There are supposed to be updated PLX chip and sideport support for the new 5xxx cards. That should be enough for the X2 type cards.

Looks like 5870x2 will be my next card.

I hope to see the shared frame buffer that has been rumored around for ages. Wasn't there also talks of MCM GPUs?
With AMD's decision to go small die and GDDR5 speeds still increasing as manufacturing becomes more mature, there is no need for 512-bit memory bus in the near future.

It's all "speculation" at this point, but of course a 5870 X2 is inevitable.

I dont think rv870 has been even taped out yet...all these sites are probably just fishing for more page hits thus bouncing this story back and forth.

I would certainly hope that the RV870 has been taped out by ATI at the very least. If they are pushing for a July release, they will need time to manufacture the cores and then ship out to their add-in board vendors so that they have time to create a working product, not to mention time needed to test the products before they ship.

I would buy it just for the 40nm process if the cooling power isn't decreased because of the drop in TDP. Having the 4870X2 heat sink and fan setup on the much smaller 40nm process would simply be bliss! I hope this also means that the cards will be shorter (even an inch shorter would be awesome).

I'll be upgrading by late Q4 2009 or 2010 so the 5870 X2 might be a worthy choice. I'd like to see how the GT300 series compares against it.
