Default [HEXUS] ATI R870 hits the rumor milla gain with 4770 40nm release

Quote:
Now that ATI has established a 40nm manufacturing process with its Radeon HD 4770, it was only a matter of time before the rumour mill began to churn out details of other upcoming 40nm parts.

Today, the attention's turning to potential RV870-based parts. According to German site hardware-infos.com, ATI's RV770 successor will arrive as soon as July '09 in the form of the Radeon HD 5870 and the dual-GPU Radeon HD 5870 X2.

It is, of course, entirely speculation at this moment in time. However, should the report be believed, the products will line up with the following specifications:

what id like to know is if the 5870x2 will still use the same x8 pcie bridge chip between gpus? wouldnt that defeat the purpose of using the pcie 2.0 x16 bridge on the mobo where the video card is mounted?

thanks.

thanks.
the card still needs to communicate with the rest of the comp.. they don't just use pci-e for gpu-gpu communications.

and wow the x2 actually has faster clocks than the single gpu card. Wonder how much ocing potential the single 5870 will have

vicious dude i know the card still has to be mounted.
darkside understood my question.

now wouldnt using the same PLX chip bottleneck the system?
i suspect that x8 PLX chip is the reason the 4th gpu core in a quadfire
doesnt scale as well as the first three.

The 3 frame buffer is why quad CF does not work. The 4th GPU is not being used. Just memory being copied but nothing is actually rendered out of the 4th card. 0 frame=1st card, 1 frame=2nd card, 2 frame=3 card, buffer runs out here and starts over on 1st card leaving the 4th card "dormant"

8x pci 2.0 is not a bottleneck (yet)..........

Capacity Per lane:

* v1.x: 250 MB/s
* v2.0: 500 MB/s
* v3.0: 1 GB/s

500x16 is 8GB/s max
500x8 is 4GB/s which is just above the speed of the 4890.

The 5870x2 will be bottlenecked slightly @ 4,600MHz
