That is a waste in phase power. To me it means that the engineers didn't know what they were doing or that marketing had their way. DFI has been getting along just fine with just a Few VRMs because their power delivery is engineered better.

That's what I'm thinking here... this is adoption bait.

This may end up being a bad thing for intel because if the i5 boards are better than any i7 board, that is even less reason to waste money on a $1k+ EE i7 chip.
