not to mention that the new hardware coming out these days requires monstrous amounts of power to run. running three GTX 285's or two GTX 295's requires somewhere around 1200 watts to run, so if people can shave a handful of watts used from their monitor, then it doesn't seem stupid at all. the only problem is if the monitor is priced through the roof...

This is the most useless thing. Even if it was put on my CRTs - all 3 of them together use 510W of power, so if we made a generous guess to say that this sensor saves 15 mins of screen time per day it would save only about 46kWh per year, which in NY translates to $4.6 of saving. PER YEAR. So even if I used them for a good 8 years that's only $36.80, which won't even make up for the cost of this monitor.

And that's when looking at the absolute worst case scenario. If you run with just one LCD you'll be using about 1/10 of that power.

I doubt a system like that would use 1200w.

My 30" monitor, and all the stuff in my sig maxes at 546w at the wall.

ok, well according to nVidia, only certified PSU's can run those kinds of setups, and most of them are indeed 1200 watt PSU's. i know, i know, certified doesn't really mean much...

Yeah those numbers seem REALLY off, and it actually shows how much power supplies are overrated. Mine is something like 280w for just the computer from the wall.

*EDIT*

And to be less off topic; it's not gonna do anything... especially considering it's an LCD.

I'm assuming these monitors will be down in the 30-40W range, in which case you'd be saving a watt or two per day, given it's stated purpose of "saving power while you take a dump."

Could be an infra red detector.

A watt or two a day? That's like saying "you'd be saving a mile per hour per day".

Watt is not a finite piece of electricity. It's a rate.

If you're using 1200 watts to run your PC, you could probably care less about saving 30-50w when you step away from the monitor for a little while.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, its actually pretty cool, but I don't think hardcore PC gamers are out there thinking they must have this to save 50 cents a month on their electricity bill. What'd be sweet is if you have 3 cards in SLI, that 2 of those cards would completely power down until you actually needed all of their power. As it stands, when I'm using my computer for non-gaming tasks, my second card idles around 65C....wasting probably 50-60w just idling.
