Default [TPU] Sapphire HD 4890 Vapor-X Gets 2 GB Variant

Quote:
Major ATI partner Sapphire is releasing a variant of the HD 4890 Vapor-X accelerator, with double the amount of memory: 2 GB. Being a variant, it retains the rest of the feature-set, with a blue non-reference PCB, Sapphire Vapor-X GPU cooler, and separate heatsinks over the VRM and memory areas. The card comes with clock speeds of 870/4200 MHz (core/memory), and provides output from DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort connectors. It is expected to retail in Europe for as low as 226 EUR.
SOURCE

Seems like overkill to me...for now, at least.

Yeah, maybe with a wider bus it would be more conceivable. Otherwise it just seems silly to pile the memory on like that. Also, why not give it a more aggressive overclock? Silly Sapphire!

Why put more memory but lower clocks?

Why is it that so many people seem to not know the relationship between bus size and effective memory frequency?

ATI/nVidia can't increase bus size because it's limited to the physical pin-outs and layout of the chip, correct? They can disable/reduce bus-size and memory chips to cut costs, but they can't add it on. Right? That has been my understanding.

Why don't you inform us please. I would like to know, since at this point I don't exactly know.

more memory is better ?? But i don't know if it really gives more real-world performance.

They seems to put alot of memory , even on cheap product. But you must consider that new games uses high-resolution textures and the poly counts never go down...

unless it's like puting 12gb of memory on a 486, i think more memory is good - but I don't like it when it's used just to keep the price high. !
