There is a big difference between driving under the influence, and driving like an idiot. Good drivers will take driving seriously and pay attention. Bad drivers won't. You can't really teach that, and making a law to ban certain devices really won't help any (IMO). I pay my government to handle things like foreign policy and violent crime. I don't want my police offers on the hunt looking for soccer mom's struggling with their Tomtom.

In this economy, state legislators should be worrying more about helping the electronics industry rather then regulating it like a nosy neighbor.

Ah, my bad. I had heard rumors of banning the use of them outright in NJ and thought this was the same thing. Sorry folks

As far as statistics is concerned, they both increase the likelihood of getting into an accident. If it's the case that cellphones actually don't increase the statistical likelihood of getting into an accident, then I agree that it's none of the state's business (e.g. it's none of the states business whether I play classical or hip hop in my car, because neither increase my chance of getting into an accident), but some of the legislated distractions DO increase the odds of getting into accidents.

It's not just your personal preference, you are increasing the chance of getting someone else injured, and these laws deter that kind of behavior.

Different municipalities have disturbing the peace/noise violation ordinances. I find them reasonable usually.

This would be almost near unenforcable. The guy is just looking for press, besides that how are drunk people supposed to find their way around w/o a gps.

In Michigan, a person can get a ticket for reckless driving, but hardly anyone ever does.

New Jersey cops have to meet a number of tickets / month that they personally give out.
Stop and think about this for a second....

Anyone else see a problem with that?

Trust me, I am not at all surprised by this law...
and I personally don't see how talking on a cellphone is THAT hazardous ... people just get headsets or speakers/mics in the car anyways.

But anyway... I need my GPS. I always get lost driving around New Jersey.... so many stupid circles and stuff lol -_-

THIS!!!

This is the most intelligent thing I've read on these forums in a long time. The more laws are made to try and stop morons from being morons the less freedom everyone else gets to enjoy.

You get a big +rep for this.

Obviously you don't understand how laws are made. In order to make any law, you have to have a majority consensus on the definition of every single word in the bill; this and all these bills are further attempts to Re/Define "reckless."

Did you really think it was that simple? that may be easier but i don't want half-baked justice.
I know for a fact there is both a law against "careless driving" and "reckless driving" in my state ("reckless" having a more severe penalty). I've received the former and know others who have received the latter. And there was nothing "half-baked" about it. I was whipping s****ies on a public street when I was a kid, and got busted for it - and deserved it.

Point being: you drive like a moron (intentional or not), you get in trouble.

Punishment will only teach the individual never to repeat the offense again depending on the severity. But only the individual. If we lived by this philosophy, there would be a rise in driving accidents. Prevention laws as they relate to driving, no matter your opinion on privacy matters with the government, are the only way to actually make a statistical change in the number of deaths per year.

Quite honestly, if you want to save lives, you can only limit the number of drivers in the end. But laws like these in a society like today are preventative enough to make someone think twice before taking their eyes off the road.

I wish they would cut it out with all these new BS restrictions. Seriously, I can live with a few more traffic deaths per year if it makes driving a much more convenient activity for millions of other people.
