Most GPS units built into cars, from the ones I've used and seen, don't let you press ANY buttons at all while moving above 5MPH or so. I know my parents get really annoyed at the damn unit in our car because we have to pull over to change it. But I've seen similar in all of my relatives and stuff.
I guess things like TomTom lets you? I haven't seen those before to know.
Um...
I have 3 GPS's in my family, all different models and they all allow you to do the same things moving or stopped.

Must be your ****ty built in GPS's... That would piss me off to no end...

The technology should be the last resort, not the first.

I wish this nation would stop being so dependent on technology...pretty soon, it's going to be so bad we can't find our own asses without three GPS handhelds, a tour guide and a homing missile!

That laptop is required for them to do their job. They have to use it to quickly run plates, licenses, ID's, as well as receive much more detailed information on possible felons than can be delivered over radio, such as images. While I do agree that they shouldn't be typing on it while driving, they need to have it in order to safely and quickly do their job.

and a paper is LESS distracting than a gps?? hmmm thats strange......seems to me a paper map forces you to take your eyes off the road to look at it, a gps with text to speech tells you where to turn, and is placed in the winshield to GLANCE at. just like you GLACE in your mirrors...should glancing in the mirrors be banned too?

You read the first six words and replied, I see.

Here, let me outline how you use it, since you seem to be completely in the dark about how to properly and safely navigate with a paper map, and seem to be incapable of reading the entire thing before commenting.

Learn to read the entire post next time, you may not make a dumb comment like that.

That isn't supposed to happen in a dash-built GPS system.

My friends father has a porsche, lexus, and honda. All three have a in-dash GPS system. They allow you to make changes to them while driving above 5 MPH or while stopped.

I would get that looked at.

Quoted for relevance to the topic.

You can look at a GPS. You can't start typing in zip codes into them and playing with settings. This seems perfectly fair to me- it is distracting, and common sense says as much as you'd like to think you're still looking at the road, you are distracted trying to work the stupid touchscreen and navigate menus (more user-friendly interfaces would make this much quicker and safer).

Less people distracted while driving = a lower chance of accidents.

If you can stop 10% of drivers from trying to send text messages or writing a grocery list while driving (obviously distracting things to be doing), Then that's a reduction in people who might otherwise carry a higher risk of being involved in an accident.

That said do you need to pass a law for every instance? I'd view the need for a specific law for phones, another for GPS, another for biros, another for chocolate bars, cigarettes etc as a waste of time and 'wallpapering over the cracks' of a lack of driver education.

Teach new drivers better judgement and common sense, to recognise things that would be dangerous to do so they can make the decision not to do them or to do them more safely.

For the existing drivers, and we all have bad habits myself included, adverts and campaigning can make people think without the need for tickets. Infact if a cop does pull you over, it would be so much better to get a talking to and the situation explained then a grunt and a ticket. EDIT: Particularly for newish drivers who aren't hardened bitter husks of their former selves and are actually still a little bit scared of cops.

This. It's a bit Off-Topic but the dependence on technology is eroding common sense in Joe Public. See the Polish bloke who drove into a lake listening to his GPS. Seriously, how stupid are we getting that we people can't even read a map. I've been driving 5 years and I don't want a sat nav... takes the fun out of it

Unfortunately, that is a "feature" on some newer cars, my mothers minivan does it too.

Its just a natural "progression" of society, we become dependent on newer technologies as they become available. What would most of us do if all of a sudden we had to spend the rest of our lives without electricity or running water? We'd freak out. But to someone from before those innovations, it wouldn't be a big deal at all.
