Default [Techdirt] New Jersey Politician Adds Most GPS Devices To Driver Distractions To Ban

Quote:
We've pointed out time and time again how silly it is for politicians to run around trying to ban each and every driver distraction, rather than just focusing on beefing up laws for reckless driving. There have been laws or proposals against driving while talking on a phone, texting, viewing a video screen, faxing, eating, shaving, playing video games and even having sex. And now, Comboman alerts us to a proposal in New Jersey to ban drivers from using GPS devices that require manual programming. Instead, drivers could only use those with voice control features. Next up? Who's going to ban adjusting the radio dial or the air conditioning?
Source

not sure if this is really considered news but I know I will be pissed if that gets banned. Seriously I could see why Street glow or halo eye headlights would be banned but gps

I'm somewhat for this kind of legislation. I drive by so many idiots on phones and reading books and finishing the 6th course of their commuting meal. Half of them don't signal, swerve around, and are just generally unaware of their surroundings. The worst part is that they honestly believe they're still good drivers and are unaffected by the distractions.

That being said, the rule shouldn't outlaw GPS, but instead put more restrictions on the implementation (ie. screens have to be directly in front of the driver, disable buttons while in motion, mandatory voice instructions instead of on-screen text, etc)

Just have one law. If you are being reckless, then you get a ticket. Nuff said!

Except that kind of vague law puts alot of power into the hands of law enforcement and the judiciary. Of course, eventually precedents will start being made, and certain activities will be seen as distracting, and others not. But honestly, how many people go around reading traffic law precedents? I think it's to the advantage of the driver to have well defined laws telling you right off the bat what you can and cannot do.

So I guess they need to really think about banning the use of your car's radio, adjusting your seat/seat belt/sun visor/etc, and having anyone (or anything in regards to pets, robots, and ghosts) else in your car that is not completely removed for all of your senses and current though train. Because, you know, all of those things are distractions that cause accidents. Yay for government!

Obviously you don't understand how laws are made. In order to make any law, you have to have a majority consensus on the definition of every single word in the bill; this and all these bills are further attempts to Re/Define "reckless."

Did you really think it was that simple? that may be easier but i don't want half-baked justice.

Because you input where your going BEFORE you even start moving. The law is banning inputting information into it WHILE DRIVING, not banning it completely.

Ok, if that's the case, why don't we ban car audio by your argument?
