Default [TPU] Intel Clarksfield Mobile Quad-Core Chips Feature Low TDPs

If repost report it

Quote:
Using new lows in core clock speeds, Intel is looking to give its upcoming Westmere-based Core i7 "Clarksfield" mobile quad-core processors surprisingly low rated TDPs. Apart from the rest of the known lineup of upcoming Intel processors, it is learned that Intel will initially have three mobile quad-core chips, all branded Core i7, and based on the 32 nm Clarksfield core. The three will include an Extreme Edition (XE) SKU. The clock speeds of these will be surprisingly low: ranged between 1.60 to 2.00 GHz, while having a high Turbo-Boost speed ranged between 2.80 to 3.20 GHz.

The Turbo-Boost speed is enabled when the processor powers-down some of its cores, and increases the clock speed of the cores that are available. In the process, power consumption is reduced. These chips have some very low TDPs that make them ideal for notebooks. The XE variant has a TDP of 55W, while the two lower models have rated TDP of 45W. The low-end model comes with 6 MB of L3 cache, while the higher two have 8 MB. All models have four cores with HyperThreading enabling 8 threads, and lack IGPs. They will run on the new PGA-G1 socket.

In related news, The first three Core i5/i7 "Lynnfield" processors come with rated TDP no higher than 95W. They come with Turbo-Boost Speeds ranging between 3.20 and 3.60 GHz.

The lynnfield that turbos itself to 3.6ghz will be a very interesting chip... I wonder how high it will be able to hit on air cooling, 4.4ghz?

So, I gotta ask... what's the point of a quad core if you're gonna use turboboost to power down some of the cores? Or is it smart enough to know when a multithreaded app that could take advantage of 3-4 cores is running?

Starting a core doesn't take more than a few nanoseconds. It could easily shut down when there is no work available.

Its OS aware

http://www.intel.com/technology/turboboost/

As an independent and complimentary feature, Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology (Intel® HT Technology) along with Intel Turbo Boost Technology increases performance of both multi-threaded and single threaded workloads. Intel Turbo Boost Technology is activated when the Operating System (OS) requests the highest processor performance state (P0).

The maximum frequency of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology is dependent on the number of active cores. The amount of time the processor spends in the Intel Turbo Boost Technology state depends on the workload and operating environment, providing the performance you need, when and where you need it.

Any of the following can set the upper limit of Intel Turbo Boost Technology on a given workload:

Number of active cores
Estimated current consumption
Estimated power consumption
Processor temperature
When the processor is operating below these limits and the user's workload demands additional performance, the processor frequency will dynamically increase by 133 MHz on short and regular intervals until the upper limit is met or the maximum possible upside for the number of active cores is reached. Conversely, when any of the limits are reached or exceeded, the processor frequency will automatically decrease by 133 MHz until the processor is again operating within its limits.

Intel must be going with "Turbo-Boost" so they can say that they have a good reason for locking their multipliers. Probably won't end up being a legendary overclocker or anything, however the 45W TDP does look promising. Hopefully someone will make a socket G1 desktop board, or make an adapter like Asus did a while back for the Pentium Ms.

If it's anything like the current i7s, it will be an amazing overclocker...

They are using turbo-boost to meet their TDP requirements, not to prevent overclocking... In fact, turbo-boost is a huge boon to overclocking.

But you have to admit that an unlocked multi would make it that much better. Having the ability to change the multi and the FSB (Or whatever it's called now) is better from an overclocking standpoint than the FSB alone.

Intel says that they lock the upper multipliers to prevent people from upping the multi on a cheaper chip and selling it as a more expensive one, but they have no real reason for locking the lower multipliers..perhaps I'm assuming too much about this chip, perhaps there will be some multies unlocked in between the two set speeds, I don't know.
