Seems like it can probably be done to any high capacity drive. It won't be the most efficient use of the platters but it is way cheaper than the velociraptors...

How is this new? This is short-stroking.... most of us have been doing this for years. I'm running 180GB out of 3xRAID0 of 7200.12 500GB. They aren't unleashing anything.... they are just limiting the use of the HD to the faster part of the platters.

To answer most of your questions: (1) a fridge cannot cool a PC (2) 64-bit OS for over 3.4GB (3) If a PCIe card fits, it should work (4) Resolution, not screen size (5) If you have a question, it is not news (6) Report, not respond to Spam (7) Single-Rail/Non-Modular PSUs are not always better than Multi-Rail/Modular (8) Sequential does not matter as much as random for OS drives

Was just going to post after reading the article, but you already said it, "Short Stroking".

yea it's kinda weird how they make short stroking out to be something new, but I guess the whole point of this is that you can short stroke a larger cheaper drive to outperform a VR.

This article is retarded

1. This technique is short stroking. You don't need to do this stupid SeaTools DOS BS, just partition it and leave the rest unpartitioned.

2. Seek times are what make velociraptors worth $200+, Something that standard drives just can't achieve

It smells like a marketing stunt. By focusing the article on a specific drive with proprietary software they make it seem like the seagate is something special, but short stroking can be applied on any HDD, including the Velociraptor, am I right?

Does the 3.1ms make a difference?

If you want seek times, then you go SSD.

If you only need 200MB.... then why not make it faster?

3xRAID0 7200.12 500GB on PERC 6/i.... using only 180GB. I "threw" away 1.2TB for more performance.
