Default [gg] Samsung First to Begin Mass Producing 2 GB 40nm DDR3 Memory

Quote:
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced today that they have begun the mass production of 2 GB DDR3 devices using 40nm technology.

Jim Elliot, the Vice President of Samsung's Memory Marketing department says, “We see market adoption to DDR3 picking up steam and are accommodating that with early entry of 2Gb DDR3 using the most efficient DRAM manufacturing technology available today,”. He hopes it will set a new standard "in premium, eco-friendly DRAM solutions offering the most advanced, low power RDIMM for servers anywhere.”

Moving to this 40nm technology will provide around a 60 percent increase in production productivity over a 50nm process.

The new 2 GB chips support a data rate of up to 1.6 GB/s at 1.35 volts, double the speed of the 800 MB/s 1Gb-based dual-die package.

Samsung also plans to use the 40nm technology in "UDIMMs (unregistered in-line memory modules) for work stations and desktop PCs or SODIMMs (small outline dual in-line memory modules) for notebook PCs of up to 4GBs" as well as 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB RDIMMS.

According to iSuppli, "2 Gb DDR3 is expected to account for 82 percent of the total DDR3 DRAM market in units sold by 2012, and become the mainstream DDR3 DRAM product by 2010."

By the looks of the data, these will be almost two times better than the current modules. And a lot of the current modules tuned and clocked well could not even pass good DDR2 modules. Whenever these come out in production then it would be a much better time for more people to go to DDR3. Currently I do not see any reason to switch over unless your on Intel boards and want to take advantage of the small increase in bandwidth that triple channel offers.

This is extremely good news. Might not wait for DDR4 anymore.

You actually were going to wait for DDR4? It won't be worth it until 2013.... and you would wait that long for an upgrade?

worst thing about ddr3 is the timing. if they could lower the latency, it would perform so much better, even when it's running ddr2 speeds, it seems to be impossible to lower the latency.

You do realize that timings are dependent on clockspeed?

CAS5 1600MHz has lower latency than CAS3 800MHz.

How does simply decreasing the architecture size increase bandwidth? Don't some changes have to be made to the motherboard to take advantage of this as well?

I believe clock speeds are changing but they leaving that info out.

Density has been doubled, so it takes less time to read I guess.

Also less heat and power means that it will probably have faster clock speeds and lower latencies.
