Default [G3D] MSI Radeon 4890 Cyclone SOC review (1GHz)

Quote:
So if we look back, say roughly a year .. what were the two products that had the most impact and success? Yeah, I tend to think that was the release of Core i7 and the Radeon 4870 based on the RV770 graphics processor. Last year when ATI introduced their Radeon HD 4870 series product it was clear from day one and onwards that they designed an ASIC which was very powerful, and thanks to gDDR5 memory, a big performance leap at an affordable price was a reality.

Prolonging the success of the 4870... in early April this year ATI launched a respin ASIC called the Radeon HD 4890. As you guys likely know this is labeled as the RV790 ASIC, a slightly tweaked yet faster running version of that original model.

One of the biggest surprises of that RV790 graphics processor was its scalability in terms of clock frequency. Where the Radeon HD 4870 reference was clocked at 750 MHz, the Radeon HD 4890 was from day one clocked at 850 MHz. But it didn't stop there though, no Sir. Merely a week or two after the launch of the 4890 the first rumors, and later on press-releases, surfaced; the AIB, AIC partners of ATI would be releasing overclocked models of the Radeon HD 4890, which was just barely released. 900 MHz is the norm for most of the overclocked products. The really exquisite ones are clocked at 950 MHz and right now there are even cards being released with a 1000 MHz core clock frequency (!).
SOURCE

Nice looking cooler.

A little late to the game, MSI.

Looks like the cooler blocks one of the xfire tabs, so no tri-fire?

My sorbs do the same, only one xfire connector is usable, I'd say this is a decent design flaw from a cooler made specifically for this card.

They claim because its overclocked that is excusable, I would rather have paid $10 more for a card with some overclocking headroom, but the temps are gonna hold me back. I wish Sapphire would make more overclocked variants with vapor-x. Vapor-X is vastly superior to anything currently being produced by ATi board partners.

Have you taken into account the Ambient temps and case where it was tested. It may not be a typical 80C during operation all the time in every circumstance.

the GPU idles at a temperature of roughly ~50 degrees C (122 F)
the GPU stressed maxes out at roughly ~80 degrees C (176F)

LOL should have just come with a water block on it.

It was tested at 21-22C, or 69.8-71.6f, about 6f cooler than my house in the summer time, even with the AC. Not only that, but the case it appears to be tested in seems to have some excellent airflow, and should not impede the results any more than ours. This is Guru3d, I would expect them to have better case air flow and cable management than many of us here on OCN.

So, as it stands, it is a mediocre at best cooler. Which I could have told you a couple weeks back when it debuted before the actual review.
