Default [Tech Report] 55nm graphics chips in short supply

Quote:
Shopping for a DirectX 10 graphics card? You might have to look harder than usual—and potentially pay more, as well. DigiTimes brings word that 55-nm graphics processors are in tight supply, yet both AMD and Nvidia are too concerned with their 40-nm, DirectX 11 products to do anything about it.

The site quotes Taiwan's Commercial Times, which itself got the information from "sources in the retail channel," as saying the shortage of 55-nm graphics chips may last all the way through the first quarter of next year.

This was to be expected. I can't just log on newegg and get a Socket A processor now can I? This is no different.

The issue is that the 55nm process is still in demand. There are only like 3 cards available that are 40nm.

Nobody is complaining about the lack of 65nm nanometer cards lately... 40nm is cheaper and more efficient. It seems natural to me that more resources will be devoted to it causing old tech to become more expensive.

Its to be expected from both manufacturers, nobody wants to be stuck with overstock inventories of 55nm chips, where the 40's are comming down the pipe already. Like what happened recently, where board partners have overstock of I believe it was 65nm chips. And Nvidia has to cut down production to avoid massive costs in inventory and overstockage. So that slowdown in production is now showing in acute shortages, when the board partners exhaust their chips. And chip maker only has aloted x amount for their production for this quarter and next.
