Default [HOCP] AMD Briefing With Eric Demers

Quote:
AMD Briefing With Eric Demers

We have posted an AMD slide deck that was the basis of a meeting with AMD GPU CTO Eric Demers yesterday. Some interesting points are being made by AMD.

We spent about 30 minutes with AMD's CTO of Graphics Eric Demers yesterday, talking about what AMD thinks about the recently "paper announced" Fermi GPU from NVIDIA.

I like AMD's slide template better than Intel's. I think that this is a very interesting read. Good find.

I'm not impressed with AMD's slideshow. Fermi has a lot of good features that they are downplaying. At the same time it's a big "It's not out, ours is" campaign. Which isn't impressive either, even if it's a legitimate point and true.

Those slides are rather uninteresting.

It's nice to know how many games are coming out for DX11 though.

Have to love AMD's disclaimer page in the back . Can't really expect anything less though, AMD is hardly the best source of reliable information about Nvidia's graphics.

I found the GPU performance specs page interesting, because there are obviously some advantages to the HD 5870 architecture, and while those benchmarks were picked to paint AMD in a good light, they still are significant. Nvidia has said publicly that the GT300 will beat the R870, and it probably will (even in gaming). Have to wonder what the difference will be though. Even in double precision performance the difference is only 30%, while the difference in single precision and floating integer is just as large in Rv870's favor. The RV870 seems to be a somewhat bandwidth starved chip at the moment, more internally I think that in the bus. New and improved drives might finally closet the performance gap one should expect from the specs though. From what i have read about Nvidia's new architecture they shouldn't have the same problem. Shouldn't that is, lot of room to go wrong in this big of a move. In the end I think it is CUDA and the API features, not necessarily performance, that will make the difference for Nvidia, especially in the HPC market. Open CL and Direct Computer are not nearly on the same level of functionality yet.

I have to admit AMD employs clever mocking. It doesn't even have to say something about NV or Jen Huang themselves. They just use his own words against him.

Now it's up to NV to respond to this slide-show. I'm loving the public PR battle

It is one thing that ATI are bragging up their products but they should back off on bashing Nvidia's when they do not even know how they will perform yet. ATI has the upper hand in the PR area after all of that Nvida crap that has happened lately but if they smack talk Fermi too much and it ends up whooping the RV890 then ATI will be the ones that will need to do some backpedaling and have some PR fixing to take care of.

Couldn't agree more, all this PR is just bovine fecal matter at this stage. I want to see Fermi's numbers and benchies in game performance. If I was AMD/ATI I'd keep my lips sealed shut until Fermi launches and we know what it's capable of.
