Default [Anand] P55 Extreme Overclockers: Check your sockets!

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3661

Quote:
We start with a picture.

The picture above is after our Core i7 870 (LGA-1156) processor was overclocked up to 5.19GHz using our cascade with a -102° Celsius evaporator head temperature under full-load. Processor VCC power draw at these frequencies is around 160W (this is possible only due to subzero cooling), as measured with a clamp meter installed at the 12V EPS power lead. Study the pictures closely and you should notice something peculiar. Keep in mind it comes from a CPU installed in the same type of socket from a particular manufacturer.

What happens after several extreme benchmark runs...
If you noticed something weird in the pictures then you understand the title of our article. We have what seems to be a potentially serious issue with proper socket loading on several P55-based motherboards. We are of course not the only one experiencing the problem as several of our overclocking peers have run into the same problem.

Looks to be a SERIOUS issue for 1156 based boards

Physical inspection and end-user reports all but confirm the issues only affects sockets manufactured by Foxconn at this time.
Foxconn 1156 based boards maybe.

Yes, but think of how many of the sockets are manufactured by Foxconn, meaning that if Gigabyte uses foxconns socket..its affected as well. Foxconn makes a lot of parts for most motherboard manufacturers.

Well, I wouldn't be to concerned, and remember this is with EXTREME overclocking. Also, you should join the club I made, in my sig.

Never liked Foxconn and i still don't. Hell, i'd be concerned just running a Lynnfield at 4GHz..

Read about this over at EVGA a while back, pretty sure shamino experienced the same thing, no need to worry unless you are pushing some serious vcore through it.

EDIT: actually I read it here - http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...cket-burn.html

And after reading that other article, seeing that some pins do not make proper contact is worrying.. I'm far to lazy to remove my block and check if mine is making proper contact though, if it dies, it dies

I think this is a symptom of extreme overclocking. Most of these chips are useless after their suicide runs anyway, the difference here is not that it is damaged, only that the damage occurred at the socket.
