Advanced Micro Devices Inc. lost money in the third quarter but said Thursday that sales were stronger than expected, adding to mounting evidence that consumer spending is fueling a turnaround in the personal computer market.

AMD sells about 20 percent of the world's computer microprocessors, which are the brains inside PCs. Although AMD was hurt by weak consumer and business spending on computers in the first half of the year, the chipmaker said shipments rose from the previous quarter thanks to strong demand for processors used in laptop computers.
This can only be good for AMD.

Not surprising. Even in the 'enthusiast' market, AMD now has much better value than Intel for low- to mid- price ranges. Of course if you're looking for the best performance possible Nehalem is top of the line, but an AM3 system a much better purchase than a soon-to-be-defunct LGA775 one.

Article = They tried selling a whole bunch of 4870's to Apple right before the end of the quarter in hopes of generating enough gross profit to have the first quarterly net income in a while, and when it turns into a net loss they say "ok, but we still sold a bunch".
