Default [FT] 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II Dimpled-Fin Heatsink Review

Quote:
Let's get right to the point, 3Rsystem's Iceage 120 Boss II heatsink is currently one of the Top 5 heatsinks tested on Frostytech. Key to the success of this Korean-made heatsink on both AMD and Intel synthetic test platforms are five 8mm diameter exposed base heatpipes and a unique "X" pattern that places the heatpipes in the path of high velocity air from the coolers' 120mm fan.

On top of that, the Iceage 120 Boss II heatsink utilizes dimpled surface fins which are intended to disrupt boundary layer laminar airflow - basically causing turbulent airflow than can enhance heat transfer. The challenge is that fin texturing techniques like dimples can cause pressure drop, making it harder for air to easily pass through the heatsink and consequently require a stronger (louder) fan.

Good looking cooler! Right up there with Xiggy's Dark Knight and the TRUE Black. Slap a high CFM Scythe fan on that and it looks like you'd have a winner based on the results. What a monster TDP rating too if that is entirely accurate.

The big thing with this will be availability and pricing.

I see they put a heatsink on the base. I always wanted to put a heatsink on that. I also don't see paper clip fan mounts! YES! I've always hated those!

Permanently fixed base. No thanks, unless it's made of some heavy duty steel. I've seen the mounts break before on other heatsinks. On most others you can just replace the mount. I like the progress in design, though.

The lower portion is shockingly similar to the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme
http://www.tuniq.com.tw/Cooler_Info/...20-Extreme.htm
If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say these two coolers are made by the same OEM. (PCCOOLER)

I like it. I tested my true once by putting a tiny 25mm fan right on the base to try and chill the copper plate.... my load temps dropped about a half degree. I eventually took it out because it was noisy as hell, but using a dimpled aluminum base is not a bad idea at all. Maybe a overlapping 140mm fan designed to sink down and blow a little against it might have been more effective.

EDIT: better yet it performance increases with more thermal output, perfect for OC'ers who can be pushing more then 200 watts with their i7 and Phenom II.
