Default [PCGH]Core i7-960: Intel introduces the CPU quietly

Quote:
Rather quietly Intel has introduced the new Core i7-960 and confirmed the expected release date. The CPU is intended to replace the Core i7-940. With 3.2 GHz the 960 offers a higher frequency than its predecessor but doesn't differ much in other regards. 45 nanometer architecture, LGA 1366, four cores, eight threads, 8Mibyte L3 cache and 4.8 GT/s QPI.
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,6...-quietly/News/

It will cost as much as an i7 940 which is 562 USD

why would they do that with the 950 already having replaced the 940?

that seems silly unless they have a new stepping coming for us. (secretly hopes for that)

They're probably doing this to give you a faster CPU, in the same price range as the i7 950. So, in a way, it's a good thing.

What they're probably doing is giving you a the same chip with a new stepping for the same price with a higher default clock.

Roll out the 32nm refresh already. Maybe then we will see i7 quads in laptops.

One question I've been asking myself is with the supurb performance and overclockability of the 920 D0, is there even a need for the higher-binned chips? Is there anything you can do at 4.4GHz that you can't do at 4.0?

Some people don't like to overclock. As shocking as that may sound on this forum.

Aren't all the i7 mobile processors native quad-cores?

Ahh yes that's a good point. After lingering around here for a while a person tends to forget that
