Default [TechReport] Acer unveils 23'' multi-touch monitor

Quote:
You don't need to spring for a touch-screen notebook or some sort of all-in-one PC to take advantage of Windows 7's multi-touch capabilities. As CrunchGear reports, all you have to do is grab a display like Acer's new T230H.

The T230H looks like any standalone 23" monitor—quite possibly because it is one. Acer says the display has a TN panel, 1920x1080 resolution, 2-ms response time, 80,000:1 contrast ratio (of the dynamic kind, we'd wager), and 300-cd/m˛ luminosity. Oh, and there are built-in speakers. You'll be able to hook up the T230H to your PC via a choice of DVI, HDMI, and VGA connectors, but you'll need to plug in an extra USB cable to use the touch functionality....
source

Sounds really cool but I'm not sure how practical it would be. How many people sit close enough to touch their monitors? I sure don't...

This is why multitouch pads/mice are more practical for home use. Otherwise, I can see the use for hospitals/businesses/etc

You guys are missing all the possibilities.

Hang one of these on a wall and use it for everything. Control house lights, jukebox, media center, pull up maps and send them to the monitor in the bedroom for the technophobe wife, play the piano, the harp, pong, monitor security cams etc...

Unfortunately, it probably has pathetically low pressure sensitivity levels. If that's the case, not really much use for anything more than just 'being fancy'.

I have one of Acer's 23" LCD monitors, but only the buttons are touch sensitive. They feel really gimmicky and hard to use. It's a good monitor anyway for only $170 at Fry's. Normally the price is $220.

I agree, you have to broaden your view of the infinite possibilities given by new products. Even if touchscreens are kinda old technology.

I like where you are going with this.

But to add to the list: a kitchen PC for recipes and music. Attaches under the cupboard.

I was actually planning to have a kitchen PC when I find a nice appartment. A small touchscreen either attached to a really cheap PC, or my netbook, and wall-mount the thing near the oven... Have a small sound system to listen music through it while you cook, heck, even watch movies, or just simply browse for recipe and stuff.
