I agree with everyones assessment of the 5700 series, for the price its definitely not worth it, they have far too few shaders and a bandwidth handicap, there is a significent gap between 5770 and 5850, they definitely need a 5830 to fill the gap
if they were priced lower, such as the 5750 at the same price as the 4770/4850 and the 5770 the same as a 4870 then they would be attractive to upgrade to for their overclockability, DX11 support and ultra low idle power draw but with the current drivers and price I don't see their value at all... I'm sure we will see them pull ahead another 10% or so with driver updates overall with larger gains in specific games but currently as things stand its definitely not worth it since we do not know just how long we have to wait for those drivers and price drops

well, when the x1800XT launched it was on par with the 7800GTX, but after a few driver revisions it was a good 10-20% faster.
__________________improvements DO happen. also, I think we need MORE demanding games to really see the 5800s shine. I have this odd feeling that a lot of those shaders are going underutilized.

I remember when I got my 8800 GTX at launch it was like 8 months later and it was still getting more powerful with the driver releases. Its always like this.

I got my 2900 because it was half price through an employee accommodation program when I was working for Best Buy and it was tough for me to buy it over the faster (but more expensive for me) 320MB 8800GTS. A few driver updates later and I was a happy camper hanging with the 640MB GTS.

yet no one is telling you to buy a new card. 5800 series provide superior solutions over existing cards @ better price points, which is always welcomed to the people who didn't feel the older cards warranted their high price tags.

I'd see these cards getting much higher framerates in games over the next 3 months or so.... 25% increase wouldn't surprise me.

In fact I tried the newest beta from Nvidia and it gave me about a 3fps drop in Crysis and I have not seen what I can say a big performance increase in crysis in months. Seriously, new drivers don't just give you a 25% or even a 10% increase in all games. There are always performance increases for espesific games and most of the time is on new released games or simply just SLI performance increases that people with one GPU never see. Please don't put so much hope on drivers. There are always limits to the hardware.

![]() So while my drivers give me better FPS every time, you lose performance? And Nvidia has great drivers? Also, my Crysis FPS keeps going up. Pretty significantly too, usually 1-3fps per release. With the exception of Crysis, pretty much everything people will be playing that would even use the power of the 5870 are going to be recent games, meaning driver updates will probably affect them.

The funny thing is that even when you are gaining performance on every driver release like you say ![]() My card still destros yours in Crysis. Even though my card seems to pretty much do all it can with Crysis and has done it for a while. See the difference is that it doesn't take nvidia years to get the most out of your card.
