Are you talking about AA here? Because apparently even on the new cards ATI is still a little behind with AF IQ.

From the article:

Subjectively the card’s AF looks better than previous ATi generations like the 4xxx series because it shimmers far less in-game, but nVidia still has superior AF overall.

As for super-sampling, when it works properly, it looks absolutely stunning (e.g. Doom 3, Quake 4, and Call of Duty 1). It also exhibits little to no blurring, even at 8xSS without a LOD adjustment. I’ve never seen the aforementioned games looking as great as they look on a 5770. Even 2xSS visibly clears up Doom 3 to the point that most surfaces sit perfectly still, yet the mode is far faster than nVidia’s 8xS.

Unfortunately super-sampling performance is subpar and inconsistent in many games due to suboptimal drivers, and there are also issues with forcing it from the control panel. Also some games have excessive blurring even with 2xSS, so it exhibits unusably poor image quality. ATi needs to address these issues and also implement a LOD slider into their control panel, assuming they don’t plan on automatically adjusting it behind the scenes, that is.

Super-sampling has a lot of potential, but it’s far too raw at this moment to be considered a general working solution.

I thought I read in a review somewhere that the 58xx series had perfect AF... maybe I'm confused with something else.

As you can see, the MIP maps in our venerable D3D AF Tester are perfectly circular, the hallmark of an angle-independent implementation. With angle-independent filtering, this effectively marks the end of the filtering arms race. AMD has won, and should NVIDIA catch up in the future the two would merely be tied. There’s nowhere left to go for quality beyond angle-independent filtering at the moment.
