Any idea how much Neo costs in bulk? The standard Atom 230 costs around $6-8 to produce and sell for $29 per in 1K bulk orders.
Someone on forums said $84.42 for a 1K bulk order of Athlon Neo's, though, I'm not sure how accurate that is. As I saw no source and cannot find anything official to credit that on.

And the ION Platform is nice, but it's being shut down.

Intel's Core 2 Solo SU's w/ GS45 chipset come in the same price as Atom Netbooks and yet perform better, can do more, and keep the same battery life.

For a consumer Atom is a horrible choice.

That's interesting since low-powered Core 2 Solo + GS45 cost $300+:
http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=33421

While an Atom 230 + 945GC costs $50:
http://ark.intel.com/system.aspx?gro...hipsetID=34502

Where's that $250 pricing difference absorbed?

I have no idea. Ask Acer, Gateway, Asus, and a few other guys why they are selling them for $400.

They must be getting some MASSIVE discounts.... or Intel had a stock that they needed to get rid of for 09H1 financial reporting.

My best bet would be the latter.

Though, it still goes down to my original standpoint.

Atom is not a good choice for the consumer, Athlon Neo, the new Via's, & Core 2 Solo are much better options.

Now... Atoms a 16 months ago forced the needed and quanities to drive prices down for all of the above. As with all tech, Atom's out-of-date now.

At Atom's launch, you could still buy some decent and cheap low power laptops.

For the longest time Newegg was selling a Compaq model with 2.0ghz Athlon x2, 3GB DDR2 667, & HD3200 w/ side port.

Got a Core Solo 90nm at 0.8ghz in my UMPC and it still runs faster than my friend's 1.6ghz Atom.
