Because Atom doesn't support out-of-order execution, is missing some instruction sets, and probably some other stuff too.

Intel says the lack of out-of-order execution is for lower power consumption.

However, HyperThreading also increases power consumption and heat.
I wonder how a non-HT out-of-order CPU would compare to the Atom in heat/power consumption.

Oh wait... there is one. The VIA Nano.
The Nano performs better (much better in some cases), but consumes more power. (The Nano is 65nm though)

The first link says Atom does.

But he's probably comparing it to a 1.6ghz Atom N230 or Atom 230

No it doesn't.

The biggest problem with the Atom, no matter how you look at it, is that all but the most basic instructions are implemented in software. Sure this reduces cost, but its way slower even than some Pentium IIIs when it comes to the ALU/FPU. Hell, I bet if they just took a Tulatain the way it was, shrunk the manufacturing process, and increased clock speed they'd have ended up with something a lot better than an Atom, and probably within the same power envelope.

mobile PC market is going big that is for sure. but VIA?? I don't know... I still remember my first Cyrix CPU overheated and burn up. Got an Intel since and never look back
