COMPARING INTEL AND AMD at the high end can be difficult. A benchmark might show that an Intel Core i7-975XE obliterates an AMD Phenom top offering, but ignore the fact that the Phenom CPU might cost only one-third of the Intel CPU. The arrival of less expensive socket LGA1156 Intel Core i5 and i7 chips changed that a bit. They are cheaper, but slightly slower than the top level Intel 975XE CPU. The system cost is also about on a par with the AMD top CPU bins. Yet, trying to put together an apples-to-apples comparison is anything but easy. After all, even though they both use dual-channel DDR3 memory, the CPU core speeds and even cache sizes are still different. So, here I tried my best to set up two configurations with as many common components as possible.

Nice find. I think AMD needs to do more with it's upcoming 6-core desktop processor (Thuban IIRC). A larger L3 cache would be one thing, for instance.

I remember reading in Maximum PC last month that even the i5 750 topped the PII 965BE.

well duh.. they're faster clock for clock and overclock to about the same clockspeed.

amd is playing the clockspeed game to make up for it because as we all know, enthusiasts make up sweet all of the market and are therefore almost irrelevant.

compare them @ stock speed and it's a little more even. 2.66 vs 3.4

The whole point of the article: Clock for clock performance. It's obvious why they didn't do that.

The phenom had its brief moment in the sun when it only had to compete with the core2quads, now, as usual it seems in the last few years, they will have to hold out tell their next architecture by lowering prices and profiting at the low end. Their athlon quads are really their strongest product, if they ever get around to actually removing the L3 cache and reducing costs they might start to make some good money off them too.

its no so easy, because Cinebench my x4 955 at 3.83 GHz is 16 500 points (whats wrong at Inq.??? Yes, uncore at default) At 4 Ghz with higher uncore hit Phenoms about 17 000 poitns. I like better Phenoms
