Default [B3D] AMD Athlon II X4 620 & Sapphire PI-AM3RS785G review

Quote:
Although they were released about a month ago, the new budget-councious quad-core processors from AMD are still fresh in the minds of many enthusiasts. The Athlon II X4 620 and 630 have made huge waves recently due to the fact that it is now possible to obtain a quad-core CPU for under $100. Pair this processor up with an AM3 motherboard running a 785G chipset and set of DDR3 RAM, and you will have your hands on a value-minded, mainstream performing rig.

Clocking in at 2.6GHz, the Athlon II X4 620 being reviewed today is very similar to the K10 architecture of the Phenom and Phenom II, but it lacks the L3 cache that is found on the Phenoms. L1 cache clocks in at a respectable 512KB and 2MB are provided for L2 cache. These numbers are very close to processors up the ladder and the lack of L3 is one of the factors keeping the cost of this processor so low.

To take advantage of this new CPU, we called upon the Sapphire PURE 785G AM3 motherboard. This motherboard was built for the new Phenom II and Athlon II CPUs and features a built-in HD4200 GPU for integrated graphics duties.

Enough with the courting, let's put these two together and see what kind of damage we can do.

I'm still debating on whether or not I should buy an X4 620 or wait for the Denebs to get cheaper. +1 OP

I have never owned or seen a sapphire board except for the 'Pure'. I need to grab one just to have a sapphire board. As for the 620, it has to be one of the best processors for a HTCP.

Well don't toss your board for something else, that board is great, I personally owned it (But I had the opportunity to go Core i7 and couldn't pass it up) and I first OC'd on that board as well.

If your building an HTCP, I'd look into the sapphires or the AM3 ASrock boards, our school just picked some up for our technology classes (The one I am in) and we are about to build them.

That board is a Jetway board with a Sapphire Sticker on it.

IE: Jetway is the OEM

And: In This Article? Someone who doesn't know AMD overclocking...

The x3 435 beats the x4 620 in POVRAY and all the Everest memory tests, as well as sisoft sandra buffered memory.
I don't get it, why is that? The reviewer doesn't mention it. Also, the test setup uses the same RAM as in the x3 tests...

The only thing I can think of is that the X3 435 is clocked at 2.9ghz, while the X4 620 is clocked at 2.6ghz.

Aah, so also a higher IMC clock.. makes sense now, that's why the x4 beats it again at 3.12Ghz.
thanks.

Nice catch.

Oddly enough I was checking those boards out last night and it didn't even click.

Hang tight a bit longer until AMD reveals which of their Denebs will get C3 stepping. The 965 was released but I'm curious to see if they will allow the X3 or X2 to have the stepping as well.

I thought I read something where all but the X4's were being phased out.

Time to put off work and do some digging.

EDIT: Hmm...looks like they may all get the refresh.
