I find it interesting that you would call Verizon greedy for trying to recoup their costs from people who are gaming the system to make a few extra bucks at Verizon's expense. This is a case of a few bad people ruining it for the rest. Verizon is giving a free BlackBerry away, and people are immediately turning around and breaking the contract because the value of the phone is more than the early termination fee. So the natural market correction is to hike up the early termination fee to disuade the practice. I see nothing wrong with this. People shouldn't sign contracts if they don't intend to keep them. Its just a shame that some people who legitimately need to cancel their contract will get unfairly hit with a higher early termination fee because of these people.

I'm with T-mobile at the moment but I'm not the primary of the account and I
m the one who pays the entire bill. . I'm splitting to join Sprint next year, their plans are better and they have reception on my college campus, while my signal from T-mobile goes dead once I step off the bus and I can't call anyone until I'm like a few yards away from the area.

You get a contract, you read it, simple and plain. If you can't accept that they're gonna charge you 350 for cancelling a contract, you might as well have tried to call a lawyer to read your contract.

In the UK you have to pay back the entire value of the contract if you wana cancel... ie 18 month contract, £35 a month, 18*35= £630

They've got the highest average deposit price for people with less than desirable credit, which is basically their attempt to weed out the people with poor credit. Their prices are only marginally higher than AT&T for service plans, and Verizon arguably has a slightly larger voice coverage area and a much higher 3G coverage area.

It is part of the contract you sign. Depending on the type of phone you buy the cancellation fee differs. Now, this is only when you use a promotion to get your phone. For example, you sign a new two-year contract and get a smart-phone for $100. The phone may very well cost $400, which they make up over the course of the two years with your data-plan and voice-plan, but you cancel early and keep the phone, they need to make up that $300. But no, they cannot do anything but send you to collections, which will hurt your credit, preventing you from getting cell-phone contracts (and other stuff) elsewhere.

Why shouldn't they protect themselves?

This is just like way back when, microsoft was giving away copies of Vista Ultimate for playing those stupid online flash games. You had people cheating and getting all the points they could buying 6, 8, 10 copies of the OS to sell... So the people who played normally ended up stuck with some upgrade version of Home Premium if at all.

Greedy companies, I say greedy consumers ruin everything.

Don't get me wrong, there is a serious problem with the way big companies get away with everything, or bailed out for that matter. But I see the reasoning behind it.

And to be honest, verizon has great coverage, not always the best customer service, but no worse than most ive dealt with.
True, but there has got to be a better way to stop the small percentage of people ripping them off without punishing the vast majority of the rest of their customers.
