Default [XBIT] "Double Impact": Thermaltake DuOrb Extreme VGA Cooler Review

Quote:
In the beginning of last year Thermaltake Technology Co., Ltd released their DuOrb graphics card cooler. I would like to remind you that it consisted of two toroidal heatsinks on two copper heatpipes and two fans that cooled this entire structure. The cooler was pretty good in terms of cooling efficiency, but worked pretty loudly and had no fan rotation speed controller. Luckily, Thermaltake engineers didn’t stop at that point and seriously modified their DuOrb cooler having announced a new solution called DuOrb Extreme. What exactly has been changed in the new cooler design, how its efficiency compares against that of the best graphics card air coolers and how noisy it actually is – you can find out all this from our today’s review.

Thanks for posting this. Looks like a great cooler. I love my Duorbs, and these seem to cool even better. I am not a big fan of Thermaltake, but the Duorb is a GREAT product.

It just sucks that they bundle such crappy memory/vrm sinks with it, though.

Indeed, I absolutely loved my Duorb.

I am a little hesitant to blame the heatsinks though; I have custom cooled the last 5 cards I have had with thermaltape+heatsinks. I learned on my first card that they will not stick right off the bat, you have to scrub the grease off the chips with lots of rubbing alcohol. I am wondering if they skipped that step and tried to stick the heatsinks right on without cleaning up first.

The only thing I don't like about air cooled GPus is that all the air stays into the case...

So do Air cooled CPU's, though. But yes this does add air that normally goes OUT of the case.

Best bet would be to add in some good case fans too.
