IF the cost to ATI licensing PhysX from Nvidia is only $5 why does Nvidia desire to prevent the consumer from making that choice (using a Primary ATI card and an Nvidia card for physx)? Then it would be easier to put pressure on ATI to license PhysX would it not? Think about it... Nvidia allows PhysX cards to be used on ATI systems, then launchers PR campaign about how easy it would be for ATI to implement PhysX (heck write it into TWIMTBP logo thing or something when the game boots up)

Consumer "what?!! ATI can do this on the cheap . ATI FIX THIS NOW!!!"
ATI " the consumers have spoken" ~sigh~
Nvidia $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Why should ATI fix anything? There are only a few games that support physx that's worth playing, and even then they can only brag about one game. Also after DX11 is mainstream physx will be dead except for console ports.

You're mistaken. The only thing PhysX is 'the best' as, is GPU acceleration. And only half a game developer's customers will even get that. I'm ok with nvidia having it only work on their cards, what is stupid is that they also force you to use their cards for rendering as well, which has nothing at all to do with PhysX. I'm surprised they're not locking out people not using an Nvidia chipset as well...

From the article

Quote:
PhysX is a simplified way to do physics in the game engines. OpenCL and even Direct Compute are very complicated languages that work mostly on a driver programming level. PhysX is a programming layer that works independent of driver based technologies and allows the game developer to work through the complicated new language with an easy to use interface.

In fact PhysX is actually embracing these new technologies to make a better overall experience for the gamer and developers. So forget that PhysX is dead because it is going to thrive with this new environment.
And this is a survey done to developers.

Quote:
Ervin Coumans, creator of “Bullet” open-source physics engine, has posted some interesting facts at bulletphysics.com recently. According to article in August 2009 issue of Game Developers Magazine, covering middleware survey results (over 100 senior developers of various development companies surveyed), Physx SDK have the lead with 26.8% in physics libraries rating, next is Havok with 22.7%, third – Bullet at 10.3%, and finally – Open Dynamic Engine at 4.1%.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Here are my objections to that survey.

1. I'd like to know who the "100 various developers" are.

2. I'd like to know the exact question posed to the developers.

So, I don't know what the percentage stands for. Is it how many developers support the various physics libraries? Is it how many developers like the various physics libraries? Or, is it how many developers utilize the various physics libraries?

Those are the questions I'd like to have answered before I can take that survey seriously.

How the hell is Havok second on that list? It powers a good 85-90% of my game library, and I can count the good Phys-X games on one hand.

Let's seee....

Havok titles I can name:

Half Life 2
HL2 episode 1
and episode 2
Portal
CSS
TF2
L4D
L4D2
Garry's Mod
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas will(As it's going to recycle FO3's game engine)
Any one of the millions of sourcemods floating around Steam
Robot Arena 2(LOOK IT UP! It's a bit old, I'll grant you, but it is Havok powered. One of the first games to use Havok, and yet when playing you can still clearly see the telltale spazzy nature of Havok constraints. )

Phys-X titles I can name:
Mirror's Edge
Batman: AA

Of course ATI wants to have everythign run on the CPU but look at the performance hit. I say screw CPU PhysX and I more than welcome Nvidia PhySX. One of the reasons why I do stick with Nvidia.

Let ATI run PhysX through OCL but give us the option to get the most out of it through Nvidia PhysX.
It's an intentional performance hit... I bet there isn't a single line of inline assembly in there.

Let's assume that's most impressed by the technology...

That still doesn't mean it's the best at anything else than paper stuff, right now PhysX is only the best at using a GPU for Physics calculations and in terms of awesome effects, everything else it's bested by Havok.

And once OpenCL becomes mainstream, it'll be bested in both those two areas as well, especially since OpenCL can use the CPU as well as GPU, preventing you from getting as much of a performance hit during games with hard 3D gameplay while having a Quad Core CPU with 2 cores idling.
