I dont think any of you guys remember that Nvidia offered ATI the PhysX on their cards if I remember correctly.. and ATI turned it down. So now Nvidia is keeping it proprietary. There is nothing wrong with that. Same to the guy below me.

Why do you think so? nVidia keeps pulling off crap like this and stopping the industry to advance. They brought a lot of new improvements but by not licensing it to anyone they are just hurting themselves as the technologies they create will never be used as a standard. The competing companies will find an alternate and make it mainstream, where anyone can have access to. /rant

QTF.
Microsoft - Intel - and Nvidia have simmilar practices.

They're the dark side
seriously - this is what one will observe.

Esp the first 2.
But in the hardware division, intel is king of the sort.

AMD did some price hogging some time aback...
(early x2 days)

bad amd.

I don't understand why everyone is so down. Just because Nvidia doesn't like Hydra and might gimp their drivers on a Hyrda board doesn't mean it will die. If hydra is released and it does what it says it will do, people will simply buy more ATI cards.

I doubt even the likes of saulin and 003 could resist the possibility of 100% scaling on a Intel/AMD platform (if it does in fact offer that) just to stay loyal to Nvidia. They would be forced to play fair if they wanted to stay competitive. Plus Lucid is backed by Intel, you think they would just sit back and let Nvidia kill their new project?

I just hope Intel lets AMD use it on their motherboards as well.

I thought Hydra had the same scaling problems as crossfire and SLI? I see the point of cross brand gpu mixing but I would rather just have 2 of the same anyway.

IIRC hydra intercepts and routes directx calls and scales very well.

Who say AMD will support this technology? Has AMD confirmed they will. Everyone is just assuming that they will. AMD might also see this as a thread to their business.

As for SLI-ing on any card I think it's cool. I think Nvidia should work on that. I would not mind using my 8800 GTX with my GTX 285, then again one is DX9 and the other DX10 so I don't know if it can work that way. Not on DX10 mode for sure.

Personally brand mixing just seems cool but will it really work? For this to work both ATI and Nvidia would have to be at the same level with drivers. What if one card has some bugs in a game but the other one doesn't. How are they going to fix this?

Maybe this might be the reason why Nvidia doesn't allow mixing different cards. If you look at the release notes on their drivers you will see fixed issues and current issues and sometimes it affects one card but not another.

This is AMD's stance on the Hydra

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1093/5/

It appears to me that they're not exactly leaning towards it, due to skepticism.

Granted, I'm assuming AMD will support it. They won't lose money in their chipset department if Hydra goes live. Crossfire is open and they don't charge a license for it and they'd still make chipsets for their CPU's. Nvidia doesn't have a CPU to make chipsets for and SLI would go the way of the dodo if Hydra took off. The only way I can see AMD turning this down is if Lucid charges a huge license fee for each board sold.

I would gladly pick up a p55 board though if it turns out that AMD will not support it at all AND Hydra does what it says it will do and offer a huge advantage over crossfire.
