Default [Inquirer] AMD will sample chips early next year

Quote:
AMD will sample chips early next year

AMD SAID yesterday that will release samples of processor chips built with its Bulldozer and Bobcat CPU cores to computer makers early in 2010.

Senior vice president Rick Bergman said the company wants to give its customers enough time to prepare for product releases at the end of the year.

The plan is that hardware manufacturers can see what is coming so they can gear up to produce products as soon as the processors become available in volume.

The Bobcat core has a sub-1W capable core with four integer and two floating-point instruction pipelines.

The Bulldozer core is a Bobcat with another 4-pipeline integer unit added. Instead of having one combined integer and floating-point scheduler, Bulldozer has two integer schedulers that...

I imagine these will be low end engineering samples to start, probably more along the lines of Thuban, Congo, and Llano, rather then future flagship parts. If they already have most of the bugs worked out of the silicon this early in the game I have to wonder why they are not gearing up for a late Q2 or early Q3 launch? I know they are waiting on GF for 32nm silicon and it takes time to line up partners and get the marketing team up to snuff, but still. Eh, then again they may be releasing parts with known bugs to see how they behave in the wild, free validation! lol.

If AMD could beat intel to the punch by getting Bulldozer out before sandybridge that would be huge. Eagerly awaiting some numbers on these parts.

It'd be interesting that's for sure, and it'd certainly surprise Intel The odds of it happening are almost impossible though I'd imagine, at least from what I know. I just do not see how they would get these out before Sandy Bridge, at least given all the information we've had in the past.

I'm going to guess these chips will be low-level engineering samples as you suggested, and that they are aiming to show the world some early indications of how the chips will perform. Either way, it's great to know we won't have to wait till late 2010 for an idea on which direction AMD is taking bulldozer. Hopefully they are really impressive!

Also... this is INQ, so as always, take some salt with this article
