yeah I heard of that. Meant to 'upgrade' the quality of DVD and HD. the differences where minimal and it wasn't really a big hit

Interesting. It's expensive for what it offers--$250 for a dedicated video encoding card that is only 50% faster than cpu encoding is a bit much. I would have liked to see some CPU usage charts for with the card vs. without. It would also be nice if you could use a 3rd party software--but of course given the specificity of the card, it requires its own program, which is understandable.
I have heard that badaboom output quality isn't the best, but I wonder how it compares in quality and speed just with cuda-enabled gfx cards. Also, it's interesting to note the implied inability to do anything with HD or Bluray source file encoding/transcoding--since they mentioned to get to HD, they up-converted SD video--which was odd. Maybe I misunderstood. I didn't catch if the article said it was compatible with h.264 to generate .mkv files? Given the general migration to HD, it's a bit silly to not incorporate it. Now maybe if they could expand the functionality of this card, similar to what gpgpu wants to offer...then again, you can find gfx cards that are much more capable for much less $$$.

I have a PCI MPEG2 decoder card...
Never saw the point in it...

This review is...weird. What's with the obvious focus on upconverting SD to HD? Um, who really cares? And not even a single test of H.264 encoding?
Maybe I'm the oddball...but what I'm looking for is cheap hardware H.264 encoding that will integrate into my video editing tool of choice. For me, that means it has to work within Adobe Premeire Elements...I don't want to render within PE, then exit out to re-render with other software that is bundled with the card. (Honestly, Adobe should just CUDA enable PE instead of enabling it only for the expensive Quadro cards...but that's another conversation.)

When I read the title on the front page I got all excited thinking it was for PS3 emulation. Boy was I disappointed.

No it isn't?
Not if you understand the point of hardware acceleration... Is it hard to believe that a GPU > CPU encoding?
