Default [LR] PlayStation 3's Cell inside your PC? The Leadtek MPEG Transcoding Card

Quote:
The Cell processor is capable of some impressive video processing, and Toshiba has taken the Cell and modified it into a multi-media powerhouse, which they call the Spurs Engine. The model that we’re using comes from Toshiba in the form of the SE 1000. The SE 1000 uses 4 of the 8 available SPE’s from the Cell. Two of the missing SPE’s are replaced with hardware MPEG-2 encoder and decoders.

To answer most of your questions: (1) a fridge cannot cool a PC (2) 64-bit OS for over 3.4GB (3) If a PCIe card fits, it should work (4) Resolution, not screen size (5) If you have a question, it is not news (6) Report, not respond to Spam (7) Single-Rail/Non-Modular PSUs are not always better than Multi-Rail/Modular

yeah I heard of that. Meant to 'upgrade' the quality of DVD and HD. the differences where minimal and it wasn't really a big hit

Yes but it was done in conjunction with an intel CPU, offloading the "multimedia" work.

Interesting. It's expensive for what it offers--$250 for a dedicated video encoding card that is only 50% faster than cpu encoding is a bit much. I would have liked to see some CPU usage charts for with the card vs. without. It would also be nice if you could use a 3rd party software--but of course given the specificity of the card, it requires its own program, which is understandable.

I have heard that badaboom output quality isn't the best, but I wonder how it compares in quality and speed just with cuda-enabled gfx cards.

Also, it's interesting to note the implied inability to do anything with HD or Bluray source file encoding/transcoding--since they mentioned to get to HD, they up-converted SD video--which was odd. Maybe I misunderstood. I didn't catch if the article said it was compatible with h.264 to generate .mkv files? Given the general migration to HD, it's a bit silly to not incorporate it.

Now maybe if they could expand the functionality of this card, similar to what gpgpu wants to offer...then again, you can find gfx cards that are much more capable for much less $$$.

This review is...weird. What's with the obvious focus on upconverting SD to HD? Um, who really cares? And not even a single test of H.264 encoding?

Maybe I'm the oddball...but what I'm looking for is cheap hardware H.264 encoding that will integrate into my video editing tool of choice. For me, that means it has to work within Adobe Premeire Elements...I don't want to render within PE, then exit out to re-render with other software that is bundled with the card. (Honestly, Adobe should just CUDA enable PE instead of enabling it only for the expensive Quadro cards...but that's another conversation.)

The Leadtek PxVC1100 with the Spurs Engine does a great job of speeding up the encoding time over our 4GHz Core i7! With nearly a 50% speed up on the DVD rip, it can really cut down on the time spent waiting for your movies to be converted!
Underclocked Cell > 4ghz i7?

That's hard to believe.....

No it isn't?

Not if you understand the point of hardware acceleration...

Is it hard to believe that a GPU > CPU encoding?
