2GB will be plenty for a laptop or desktop.

The Fact of the matter is that 90% of today's computers will not have 2 gigs of ram when vista comes out or even 1 gig. Most computers have 512 ram.

The average person doesnt know crap about computers and most likely has a lower end dell with 512 memory.

microsoft is going wayy too high on the requirements as 90% of the Pcs will not be able to run it fast enough so most people will stay with XP a while.

Yet most people WILL buy new PCs with Vista. Most people don't bother with upgrades and prefer to just buy a whole new PC. Microsoft knows this.
