^^

I doubt there is a graphical difference between CD and DVD versions. CD versions have multiple disks, and DVD's have enough space to store everything that will be transferred. The only things they are used for anyway is the installation itself, copy protection verification, and possibly the intro logos on older games.

Right?

Your analogy misses the point entirely.
The situation the GP was describing is a more like trying to sell yak's milk in a Bavarian beer garden. You can bring as many Nepalese sherpas as you want, each with their own entry visas, and the yak might clear customs, but unless the milk is pasteurized you're still going to run into problems. And who's to say the Germans have a taste for yak's milk anyway? It's shortsighted thinking like this that leads to posts like yours.

It is not needed yet. Unecessary technology is bad. Its a waste of money. Most games dont even come close to needing a 5GB DVD, let alone a 9GB dual-layer DVD. Game makers have only just begun to switch to DVD, do we really need Sony jumping in and shoving a format we dont need yet down our throats? DVD has plenty of life left in it, and the price per GB is far, far less than Blu-Ray.

#2 - Compression is not an ideal solution, ever watch a DVD that has been compressed? Bad quality.
Texture compression is lossless, meaning that it doesnt lose any quality after being compressed. Its like converting a picture from BMP to PNG. PNG uses lossless compression, so while it takes up considerably less space, the quality remains the same. Not to mention that uncompressed textures take far longer to load. So why not compress them?

#3 - Wrong. I would be most interetsed in a game with 600 hours of gameplay. Even if I were alone (and I am not) your statement that "No one would want a FPS that lasts 600 hours." is incorrect, as I would, and I am not no one.
You are in the minority. Most people want to actually beat an FPS in a reasonable amount of time, or it gets boring and repitive. Perhaps if you made an RPG-style FPS you could pull it off, kind of like the GTA series.

There is nothing left to say.

Again, you are welcome to your opinion, but I would thank you not to tell me what I know and don't know. I never said the only reson to change was this, or that. The fact is they had to move from cartridge to CD, you're comments on why do not change the fact that the change was needed. And I don't recall anyone complaining about these "new fangled CDs" as not needed yet when they first came out.
CD's are cheaper and hold more data that cartridges. So it was win-win situation. On the other hand, Blu-Ray holds more than a DVD, but costs far more for space that isnt even going to be used for years.

Yeah, I read it. It can be made with little to NO modification of equipment and be made nearly the same way. I laught at blu-ray. Not to mention dual layering it would be 200gb's .

When Blu-ray is first Released i really cant see many benefit or it being used to its full potential for a rather long time..Lets face it the biggest games you get on disk are like 7-8gb from what ive seen. As graphics progress the Texture Files become bigger so yes more GB'S will be needed eventually byt as seeing Hardware is only at a certain step then i cant see games with extreme textures so therefore wont take huge andvantage of the sheer size of disks such as Blu-ray.

Toshiba is shipping its HD-DVD player for half of what Sony is selling its Blu-Ray player for. I think its becomming clear which format will win.

Well as seeing that HD will be alot cheaper and that blu-ray isnt that much different only that it can hold more data then i can see people really going for HD-DVD.
