__________________"Whether TDK is actually the first out of the gate with Blu-ray recordable discs available to the public, may be a matter of some debate - Sony is also claiming that honor - but today, TDK announced it's ready to ship to US retailers what it's describing as the first publicly available single-layer Blu-ray recordable discs. The news means that retailers are likely to be able to sell 25 GB recording media to consumers when the first components hit the shelves, perhaps in late May, most likely in June. However, the question of 50 GB dual-layer availability is a little less clear." Check this out though- "TDK is saying its dual-layer 50 GB Blu-ray discs, to be priced at $47.99 for recordable and $59.99 for rewritable, will not be available until later this year." 50 bucks for 50 gigs? You can get an 80gig HDD for that. I don't think I'll be using these to backup data. Very cool technology though, and prices will come down. I remember when CD-burners were $500.

I dont see why Sony is using Blu-Ray Discs if they hold that much. I mean, it's a complete waste of resources.
50GB Blu-Ray disc and only using 5GB at most?? Unless they are making smaller sized discs for a lot less, for games and DVDs. i have a feeling this is going to be a dud

That is correct. The reason games now a days only take 5 GBs is because the developers could never ship a game that took 10 discs (50GBs). Now that it is an option, you will see more detailed (and hopefully bigger, longer) games as they start to use the technology that is available. It's like when Bill Gates said no one would need more than 100MB of hard drive space or whatever insanely low amount he said.
__________________technology advances first, then it gets used. They will not be charging $100 for PS3 games, that's silly. They want to sell games, remember? And people are complaining enough at the $60 360 games (on regular DVDs by the way, not the HD-DVDs that they were supposed to be on originally.) Just like they won't be charging $700 for the PS3 itself. The TDK prices are for retail, and I promise you, Sony is not going down to Fry's and buying a 50 pack of Blu-Ray discs. ![]() You call TDK and ask them what it costs per unit to buy 50,000 discs, I bet you it's under $20 each ![]() I wonder though, I haven't seen any Blu-Ray burners out yet, so what am I gonna do with TDKs blank Blu-Rays? ![]()
