Default Ultra Low End Intel Core Processors Show Up In Japan

Quote:
New Intel Celeron processors start selling before Intel's official announcement

Just as products based on Intel's Core Duo processors are showing on from various manufacturers, The Register is reporting that low cost, single core Celeron M processors based on Intel's Yonah core are surfacing in Japan. Dubbed the Celeron M 420 and M 430, the new chips are already shipping. Intel also has a low cost Celeron M 410, but according to Intel roadmaps, the chip isn't shipping until Q3'06.
Intel Entry Level Celeron M 400 Series
Processor Speed L2 Cache Launch
Celeron M 443 2.00GHz 1MB Q1'07
Celeron M 440 1.86GHz 1MB Q4'06
Celeron M 430 1.73GHz 1MB Q2'06
Celeron M 423 1.06GHz 1MB Q2'06
Celeron M 420 1.60GHz 1MB Q2'06
Celeron M 410 1.46GHz 1MB Q3'06

Interesting! This looks good for low end PCs.

The problem with mobile chips for low end is that they usually need a somewhat high end motherboard to be able to lock in the multiplier as the mobiles on a value motherboard will remain locked at their low multiplier. So one buys a low end cpu and puts it in a high end motherboard and overclocks it but as a value cpu in a value board it is not a good equation. Far better to buy a low end desktop cpu and low end motherboard for a value system.

I wasn't sure why they called then "ultra" either. If they are based on core, then 2.0Ghz can't be that bad. Plus they have 512kb cache, double the older cellies.

I just saw an article on XtremeSystems last night that the Yonah based Celly Ms were tearing it up... this guy OC'd a 1.7Ghz Celeron M to 3.1GHz on Air and it got a Super Pi 1M time of 21 seconds... But there's only one desktop motherboard compatible with it, and it's $300.

IMHO if you can save some $$ by purchasing an inexpensive Yonah @ 1.7 and oc to 3.1 on air, I'd float the cost of a $300 mobo for that kind of performance.
